Katie Campbell

Career Path: Marketing Assistant, Wilsonart
Location: UK

Describe your current role and responsibilities.

Managing different elements of marketing from social media channels through to trend forecasting. I am responsible in assisting the whole of the marketing department on various tasks, whilst focusing on my own specialism of Digital marketing, which includes: Social media, copy-writing, data analysis and trend forecasting. This role has offered a diverse range of opportunities, allowing me to build my portfolio and industry experience. I can honestly say that I am working in a job that I love, (albeit, I didn't think I would be working for a global laminate manufacturing company).

Why did you decide to study Fashion Communication at Northumbria?

The course had a good reputation and I was hopeful that this would open many doors for my future and my career.

What are the most useful skills that Fashion Communication taught you?

To be resilient and to always be open minded to opportunity. It's very easy to get bogged down with what everyone else is doing, however at Northumbria the lecturers definitely listened to each individual and gave them advice on each person’s ideas and expectations. Fashion Communications also taught me the importance of ACTUALLY picking up a book and reading it, knowledge is power!

Did you get any work experience / internships while studying?

I was writing for The Tab and for Noa Vee during my second and final year studies.

What is the one piece of advice you would give this year’s graduates?

Have fun! Don't worry about what the person next to you is creating, create your own type of 'art', whether that be a magazine, a piece of creative writing or a social media campaign. Work on yourself and your own ideas and everything will eventually fall into place.

Describe Fashion Communication in three words:

Challenging. Opportunity. Underrated.
