Fc _simmonsWhat are you doing now?

I work at an Advertising and Marketing agency based in Newcastle. Different is the largest agency in the North East and is able to boast clients such as Benfield, Barker and Stonehouse, L'Oreal, DFDS, Land Securities Shopping Centres to name a few. My role as a client partner is diverse and exciting, and I have had the opportunity to work on projects such as photo shoots, exhibitions, TV, press, radio, brand reviews, digital campaigns, and this is all within my first 6 months.  Working at Different has given me the confidence, experience and platform to further me in my career.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals / give your career an edge?

Going into university, I had the perception that I would end up in events, specifically fashion events. But as I progressed I had my eyes opened to a broader range of skills and disciplines. I found that experiential marketing was my forte, and the film industry was my passion. Fashion Communication can be considered a limitless course; I was given the opportunity to explore what I enjoyed, without being constrained by curriculum. Because of the diverse range of modules in the first 2 years, I had the chance to realise where my skills were, then specialise in my final year. The lecturers were extremely knowledgeable, but more importantly, passionate about the students and their projects. They gave me the kick and the push when I needed it.

What was the best thing about your course?

Fashion Communication didn't feel like learning. All my projects were my choice, which meant that I enjoyed every minute.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now/throughout your career?

Research and exploration was key in Fashion Communication. This has taught me to bring new and exciting ideas to the table, but also challenge ideas. Not only does it make my work more current, exciting and diverse, but the bosses love it when a new girl speaks up!

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Fashion Communication was a really tight knit group of students. Everyone contributed to everyone's work and bounced off each other. As there was only 40 of us, we became really close as a group, and were with each other every step of the way, up until Graduate Fashion Week

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Do it!

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in 3 words?
