SM9540 - Entrepreneurial Management

What will I learn on this module?

Successful entrepreneurship requires a broad understanding of management processes and techniques ranging from finance to strategy, HR and organisational behaviour. This module provides you with an overview of key management techniques and ideas which will be useful in your future entrepreneurial career. You will learn some basic concepts from a range of management disciplines with a focus on essential skills and their application in the entrepreneurial business.

Topics will include the following:

Foundations of strategic management
Entrepreneurial finance
HRM for new businesses
Organisational culture in the entrepreneurial business

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops, some coaching, guest speaker lectures, independent learning and work-related projects. The presentations will improve your knowledge and understanding by introducing you to mainstream academic theory. The seminars and workshops will help you to test their value and their limitations, as well as giving you a chance to discuss them with the tutors and your peers. You will be encouraged to apply the theory to business examples. Learning is supported by tutors and the overall pattern is set out in a Teaching and Learning Plan (TLP) which describes the key topics and guided sessions, and lists key readings, preparation and individual and group activities.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported with a comprehensive set of learning materials via the e-learning platform which will provide access to academic materials such as journal articles, reports and case studies, but also grey literature such as company reports, newspaper and magazine articles, videos and blogs. The platform will include comprehensive reading lists for each component of the module (lectures and seminars).
Ongoing support and guidance will also be provided by the teaching team through a mix of class sessions and via discussions on the e-learning platform.

How will I be assessed?

Informal feedback will be provided by tutors and peers in seminars.

Summative assessment:

The assessment for this module will be composed of 2 parts:

Part A: practical activity (e.g., presentation, marketing campaign, real-life client project coaching (providing recommendations and growth strategies for a client’s business/plan), or coaching an entrepreneur for example…) (MLOs 1&3) (30%).

Part B: 2000-word essay, part of which is reflective, with a particular focus on Part A, and the other part more theory-based (MLOs 1, 2 & 4) (70%).

Module abstract

The entrepreneur needs to have a broad overview of the business with an understanding of all the disciplines involved in management. This module provides an overview of key business disciplines and processes to provide a foundation for understanding the entrepreneurial business and developing new business ventures. The module includes strategic management, entrepreneurial finance, human resources, and business operations. Concepts will be introduced through lectures and further developed in seminars.
