What will I learn on this module?

In this core module, you will form theatre and performance companies, each with a clear identity and purpose. You will develop appropriate working practices that are grounded in relevant processes from the programme, indicatively: making, thinking, questioning, collaborating and sharing. You will create specific events that are focused towards life and work beyond university, or in further study. In so doing, you will engage a select set of specific practices appropriate to that project, but which are likely to involve mapping existing practice, identifying starting points for a company and project, devising and developing appropriate making practices, working as peer mentors and with peer-mentors, reflecting and rethinking, refining and rehearsing, selecting and focusing, performing and presenting. Companies may work in a range of areas, in discussion with staff and subject to resources. These may, indicatively, include: Performance, Events, and Workshops (e.g. offering training for companies, organisations, community groups, etc.).

How will I learn on this module?

The learning methods on this module are designed to foster a strong sense of independence and self-direction, and mentor the emergence of a self-directed company performance, presentation or workshop. The module is intended directly to face the world beyond university, to be responsive to your interests and ambitions. As such, taught sessions will focus on tutor facilitated guidance on the formation of the company or companies, followed by discursive sessions that will help you to develop the parameters and focus of the project you will work on; this will be done (indicatively) though tutor-designed tasks/exercises, sharing of ideas with peers and receiving feedback and developmental tutorials with your supervising tutor. In later stages of the module, tutorials and supervisions will provide opportunities for you to show your work to your supervisor on an iterative basis, to receive feedback on the development of company plans and the emerging work, and there will be work-in-progress sessions for sharing and showing the work to allow for testing of emerging practice in front of an audience of your peers.
Once established and securely engaged with the module, companies will be allocated a supervisor to respond to their work.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

As the module focuses on developing your autonomy as critical creative practitioners, you will be supported to develop your practice through regular supervisory sessions with a tutor who will help guide you through the design, development and delivery of your project. Throughout the module peer-to-peer feedback will form an important informal support and development mechanism, alongside formal formative feedback offered by tutors as the work emerges. This will take the form of verbal feedback, provided in class and tutorials; written feedback provided in response to your presentation and performance; and feedback from your fellow students. All sessions will be designed to be developmental and supportive, mirroring incubation and research and development practices from within theatre and performance and the creative industries more broadly. You will be encouraged to take risks, to experiment and to work in new and challenging ways.

Information about the module structure and timeframes, alongside research and practice resources will be available to you 24/7 on Blackboard; this will include an emerging archive of websites, online video material, readings and links relevant industry events and reflections that will be responsive to your and your peers emerging practice, helping you access focused materials to aid in the development of appropriate knowledge and understanding to make the work and position it in the wider performance landscape in the UK.

Written assessment feedback will be provided within 20 working days of summative assignment submission. Access to library facilities is available 24-7 all year round.

How will I be assessed?

Formative:
Reflective discussions and feedback sessions from tutors
Work-in-progress showing (presented in relation to the project plan with supporting viva)

Summative:
Project plan with supporting viva (30%) (MLOs 3, 5)
In your group, you will present an example of a scene or moment that reflects the aims, purpose and focus of your final performance. This can include explanatory materials to aid the articulation of your planning.

Final Performance with viva (70%) - performance of c. 30-40mins depending on group size and project aims. Supervisors can advise on best approach.

Module abstract

Do you want to start your own performance company and make work that speaks to audiences about the world in new ways? Or perhaps you are simply intrigued by a piece of theatre you have seen and you wish to emulate it in some way? In this core module, you will form performance ‘companies’, each with a clear identity and purpose. You will develop appropriate working practices that are grounded in processes you have learned from the programme: making, thinking, questioning, collaborating and sharing. Engaging with our cultural partners (such as Alphabetti Theatre, Live Theatre), you will create performances that are focused towards life and work beyond university, or in further study. Guided by the internationally recognised research and practice expertise of tutors, you will be supported to situate your work in the contemporary theatre field and challenged to articulate your own critical and artistic vision.
