What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about the key requirements and management practices relating to health, safety and wellbeing within the context of the construction industry. These include the likes of assessing risk, and ensuring safe systems of work are operationalised.This is a vital topic for the construction profession and is essential for future graduate employment.
How will I learn on this module?
Workshops will introduce the practices and principles concerning health, safety and wellbeing in the construction industry and allow for smaller interactive/enquiry based learning activities. These will typically involve the use of digital materials (such as web links and videos), and discussions to engage you further and enrich and enhance your learning. Through these media, you will be encouraged to practice research-based problem solving to analyse current issues within the construction industry and propose potential solutions.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Use will be made of the University’s virtual learning environment (eLP) to direct you to learning opportunities. This will be in the form of the teaching material and supporting documents such as research papers, current media coverage, interesting weblinks and relevant videos, for example. You will be provided with regular feedback for improvement and a more open platform to ask the questions necessary to support your learning.

How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment will be used to allow you to build confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical and professional concepts presented in the module. Additional formative feedback shall be delivered to you verbally by academic tutors during formally-scheduled teaching and individual or group activity-based sessions to help you learn and prepare you for the submission of your summative assessment.
Summative Assessment
Summative assessment will be by one piece of coursework that will assess your ability to satisfy all the module learning outcomes. You will be assessed using a problem-based approach, allowing you to critically apply your knowledge from the module to a real-world scenario. You will use the University’s eLP to receive your feedback using appropriate digital feedback tools.

Module abstract
The construction industry is a complex, dynamic and exciting global industry. It shapes all of our lives by providing the built environment in which we live. However, construction projects can only be considered successful if they are delivered safely. Therefore, understanding what health, safety and wellbeing means and how it can be successfully managed are an essential part of becoming a construction professional. The module provides the opportunity to study construction projects and understand the industry professionals who manage health, safety and wellbeing. The module is situated at level 5 specifically to prepare you with the necessary knowledge and understanding required for graduate employment, but specifically, should you take up the sandwich placement year.
