What will I learn on this module?
This module aims to extend the theoretical and practical implementation of Network Services in a hybrid networked environment and to investigate the current and future trends of network services. The module will provide an opportunity for you to develop the skills and knowledge to critically appraise and select the features of current OS's and how they are configured and integrated to provide corporate level services. You will learn how to analyse the requirements of a business and then map those requirements into a hybrid network environment utilising services appropriately.
The syllabus of the module will cover topics such as:
- Network OS implementation of TCP/IP
- OS implementations of (e.g.) system accounting, security
- Hybrid deployment of (e.g.) DNS, HTTP, file sharing, database services (e.g. MySQL).
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be taught as a combination of lectures and seminars.
The lectures will cover the theoretical/standards components of network services and their functionality and how they map to a business infrastructure within different operating systems
The seminars will cover the current operating systems support for these protocols and services and allow you implement these services/facilities and apply them to business needs with a theoretical underpinning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by laborarory supervision in seminar exercises and by direction to white papers from application suppliers and to RFC standards.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Map the theories and principles of network services and the underlying communications infrastructure they utilise in multiple operating systems.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Critically evaluate the implementation of network services and their protocols and how they affect business infrastructures in a hybrid environment
3. Analyse and select appropriate features of a selection of operating systems and services both commercial and open source for computer network implementation
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. Critically appraise and apply a selection of tools and techniques to test and monitor network services in a corporate environment.
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment will be in the form of a portfolio of work. This will involve a pratical implementation and demonstration of a network architecture design that has been implemented into a virtual environment, there will also be a technical report showing how consideration of business needs have been considered within the implementation (2000 words). The portfolio assessment covers all of the module's MLOs.
Feedback will be provided on your assessmet work in writing / a laboratory feedback session.
Formative assessment will take place during seminars where you will work on the practical implementation within a virtual environment. You will receive feedback on your progress during each seminar which will allow you to judge your ability to implement the theories and skills taught on the module.
