FA6003 - Final Major Project: Realisation

What will I learn on this module?

Final Major Project: REALISATION enables you to consolidate and extend your intellectual and creative skills through a self-directed final major project. Applying research generated in your Semester 1 modules, you will design, make and promote your concept through garments, collections, products and publications. Your skills will be applied to promoting your concept using a wide range of visual media from print to photography and film. This work will be underpinned by an understanding of your practice within a cultural and commercial context, enhanced with specialist practical skills and evidenced through the creation of your individual design portfolio. This Final Major Project enables the synthesis of acquired knowledge, skills and expertise into a body of work encouraging you to relate your personal practice to contemporary society, culture and commerce. This comprehensive body of work will culminate in a final presentation..

Using your creative, contextual and market research generated in Semester 1, you will produce a Marketing Plan which justifies, documents and evaluates the work of your Final Major Project. This report offers an objective account of the design process, a validation of the proposed design solution and an understanding of the fashion marketing planning process applied to a real fashion-marketing scenario.

The specialist skills selected in Semester 1 will continue to support the individual nature of your concept proposal, giving you the opportunity to further develop your ideas and proficiencies towards your FMP outcomes.

You will create a professional portfolio of design, illustration, photography, graphic promotion and brand development. Guidance is provided in building a personal portfolio through independent research and analysis of contemporary fashion design development to specific product area, illustration and media techniques and style. Industry-facing collaborations, competitions and Final Major Project work are compiled with the aim of presenting you as a creative designer who is able to visually communicate concepts and final designs to a highly professional standard.

How will I learn on this module?

Northumbria X-Studio (Extended Studio):

Learning and teaching strategies on Fashion Design & Marketing encourage you to acquire a flexible and imaginative approach to creative problem solving through enquiry-based learning. You will become an active participant in your learning, integrating creative practice with academic and intellectual skills.

The School of Design operates an extended studio approach (X-Studio) that embraces our physical studios and making workshops as well as our virtual spaces to create a flexible and rich environment that is responsive to our learners’ needs.

This dedicated approach has been developed over many years of continuous teaching innovation, research and industry collaboration. It has created a supportive extended studio culture that encourages our students to learn flexibly, dynamically blending their learning and University experience between physical and digital interactions both in real-time and online at their own pace.

We believe that this extended studio culture not only helps our students to become more confident autonomous learners but also prepares them for a dynamic design industry in which an extended studio philosophy is current practice.

Project-based learning will equip you with a creative approach to the progressively interrelated nature of practical and intellectual skills. Hands-on participation will enable you to display evidence of creative thinking through the making and communication of design concepts/artefacts that have a purposeful outcome. There is focus on the acquisition of technical skills and the use of materials and processes in identifying and solving problems. The studio and workshop environment are integral to this approach where it supports a creative collaborative community, and collegial exchange. This can be both a physical and virtual activity. The teaching and learning strategies emphasises creativity and experiential enquiry, enabling active participation in observation, recording and making through design practice

Traditional, new and emerging technologies are used both in the delivery, observation and realisation of outcomes. Marketing and contextual studies enhance knowledge and insight into your personal practice within a social, moral, ethical and commercial setting. The module prepares you for employment by providing the opportunity to gain specialist skills, professional attributes and entrepreneurial capabilities.
