What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will begin to apply your theoretical, pedagogical and subject knowledge, gained through engagement in university based lectures, seminars and workshops, in school based settings. This will take the form of non-assessed serial placement days during the year. You will focus on the development of specific skills and interventions, with individual children, small groups and on occasions with whole classes. During these placement days you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and understanding and develop your ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in professional school contexts for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will begin to plan, teach and manage children’s learning across the appropriate curriculum for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2, with appropriate support from experienced professionals. You will develop valuable skills including the ability to reflect upon your practice and make links between the theoretical aspects of the programme practice in early years and primary educational settings. Through this reflection you will begin to set yourself appropriate professional targets. You will begin to develop a sound knowledge of curriculum pedagogy in core and foundation subjects, for the relevant age phases, through supporting experienced teachers and carrying out set tasks independently. This module is designed to enable you to begin to gain an understanding of, and begin to gather evidence towards the standards and requirements for qualified teacher status.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through school-based experiences how apply your emerging theoretical, pedagogical and subject knowledge in classroom practice including the use of ICT across the curriculum, for the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will begin apply this knowledge through the planning and delivering effective activities and lessons to small groups within the relevant age phases of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1 and 2. You will reflect upon the effectiveness of your own practice and set yourself targets to promote your professional development. You will develop a range of other professional skills including your ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, communicate effectively, adopt a flexible approach, and be highly organised and overcome professional challenges through being dedicated and resilient. The combination of all of these skills will allow you to gain an understanding of and begin to gather evidence in support of the Teachers Standards (DfE, 2012) and requirements for qualified teacher status (QTS).

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported and/or mentored by both academic and partnership staff during this placement. You will draw on your university based lectures, online materials and workshops and engage in tasks set by academic staff. This module leader will provide support and guidance relating to the appropriate use of all placement documentation whilst on school placement, outlining all of the placement expectations and offer support with gathering evidence in relation to the Teachers Standards (DfE, 2012). Throughout the school placement the module leader will be your University based contact should you have any further queries. You will receive regular support from a school-based mentor throughout your placement who will help you to reflect on your experiences and to set targets to ensure your development.

You will spend a growing amount of time over the year in both schools and Early Years settings. In school, under the guidance of an experienced teacher, you will gain the opportunity to observe good practice and carry out tasks to support children’s learning. Using a placement specific tutoring system, the University will monitor your progress and support you in schools and Early Years settings. This network of support will ensure that you make the best possible progress in your first year.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:.
1. Develop the skills of; observation, planning, managing and assessing children’s learning for individual activities across some of the curriculum in collaboration with, and under the guidance of, the identified mentor across the relevant age phases
2. Develop the ability to work within curriculum requirements to draw on personal subject knowledge and pedagogy and make effective decisions about managing learning across the relevant age phases.

4. Know, understand and be able to work within the cultural and professional context of the relevant age phases

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment

You are required to attend a serial placement days in school which will enable you to gain experience across the early primary and primary age phases.

Drawing on your time in school and your school-based tasks reflect on the differences you have noticed in the approaches, strategies and pedagogies across the primary age phase and use this to justify your choice of age phase specialism

Module abstract

Educational Placements 1’ is the module that will help you to begin to develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a professional teacher. You will have the opportunity to begin to apply your subject, theoretical and pedagogical knowledge in a practical setting. Through the successful completion of a non-assessed placement you will have the opportunity to begin to develop the necessary pre-requisite skills to become an effective primary teacher. Prior to placement experience you will attend lectures and tutorials aimed at preparing you for a successful placement experience. You will receive guidance and support from academic and school-based staff throughout your placement experience to begin to develop your potential, reflect upon your practice and to fulfil all of the placement expectations. Through the support that you will receive it is anticipated that you will find the school based placement a highly rewarding experience and one that will equip you to make the informed decision about the focus of the rest of your training towards becoming a successful and effective teacher.
