What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about the theory and technology of renewable energy conversion systems, specifically about the followings:
• Renewable resources, their characteristics and stochastic modelling
• Wind turbines: components and performance measures, conceptual design, structural loads, blade and tower structural design considerations, operation and control
• Aerodynamics of wind turbines: blade element momentum theory, blade aerodynamic design
• Photovoltaic: conversion theory and technology, sizing and design considerations
• Storage systems: power and cost modelling
• Hybrid systems: power, cost and reliability/availability analyses and system architecture design for various configurations including wind, PV, battery, diesel and fuel cell
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn related theories and concepts via lectures and seminars and will integrate theory and practice through workshops. Workshops provide an interactive learning environment, where you will design a hybrid renewable energy system and analyse its performance in terms of its cost, lifespan, power and reliability.
Assessment will offer learning opportunities both formally through the marking and feedback and informally through the discussions with tutors in and out of the classroom.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Direct contact with the tutors will provide you with direct support both in class and through the eLearning portal. In addition our open door approach will offer you the opportunity to develop professional methods of engaging with support which will assist you as you progress in your career as an engineer.

What will I be expected to achieve?
You will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge which is at the forefront of wind, solar and hybrid renewable energy technologies
2. Critically apply advanced calculations for evaluating the performance of renewable and storage components of hybrid renewable energy systems at system and component levels
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Demonstrate comprehensive and critical understanding of wind turbine aerodynamics and mechanical components conceptual design and detail design of wind turbine rotors
4. Critically plan the configuration and sizing hybrid wind-PV-diesel-fuel cell-storage energy systems
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Demonstrate thorough awareness of the financial and environmental impact of utilising standalone and on-grid renewable energy systems at domestic and industrial scales
How will I be assessed?
Formal Marked Assessments
1. Coursework-Assignment (50%)
This will assess all of the MLOs. Within 20 days after the submission date, you will receive a feedback sheet with marks and comments on each task and sub-tasks.
2. Examination (50%)
This will assess MLOs 1, 2 and 3. Written feedback will be given on your exam script within 20 working days after the exam.
Informal Assessment for Learning
You will be assessed on all learning outcomes during the workshop session. Discussion with the tutors and reflection on your performance will allow you to continuously monitor your performance and feed this forward for improvement.

Module abstract
This module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the theories and principles relating to wind turbines and photovoltaics, and the design and sizing of standalone and grid-connected hybrid renewable energy systems. On completion of this module, the student will be able to conduct essential calculations for the analysis of aerodynamic, mechanical and structural components of wind turbines. In addition, the student will be able to carry out conceptual and system-level design for hybrid renewable energy systems. Learning and teaching will be carried out through lectures and workshops, in which students use the state-of-the-art of the software tools and work on their wind turbine design and hybrid renewable energy system design projects.

Full time Courses starting in 2023 are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but may include elements of online learning.
