PA7003 - Theatre and Performance Project

As this is an independent study module, you will learn mostly through independent research, exploration, reflection and praxis. An initial series of group seminars will give you an opportunity to report on your work-in-progress and receive feedback from your tutors and peers. Through the seminars, you will also be offered guidance on university Research Ethics Policy, Risk Assessment procedures, and guidance on how to evaluate your project.

Blended learning workshops and seminar sessions will help you prepare for the assessment point on the module. In these sessions you will focus your plans for developing, researching and documenting your practical work, and you will receive guidance on constructing a professionally focused website for your project.

You are encouraged to utilise and build on the critical resources developed through the other modules, working on rehearsal, making and research processes, through formative feedback, online or in person show backs and presentations, you will have the opportunity to rehearse and test ideas before submitting the final documentation of your project. You are encouraged to engage in online or in person ‘scratch’ opportunities within the university and NewcastleGateshead performance cultures to document the performance of extracts of your work in development to receive critical and professional feedback that will inform your final project.

The module supports you to continue to deepen and extend your academic and industry links and networks. It encourages you to maintain an ongoing, active engagement with NewcastleGateshead based cultural and academic partners via online and in person networking and research events; and to develop self-marketing skills that will ensure your final work reaches its intended audience.

Each project and professional/academic collaboration is managed and supervised by academic staff; however these collaborations arise from the specific interests and skills that you bring to the programme and through initiatives of your own.

This is an independent project, in which you will be assigned a project supervisor. Following an initial group workshop with your peers and module tutor, you will also meet (online or in person) with your supervisor for a series of tutorials at the outset of the module. Your supervisor will support you to revisit and refine your Project Plan; to produce an extensive bibliography and resources list to support the documentation and development of your project; and agree a timescale with you for delivery. You will also complete and sign off a ‘project proposal’ with your supervisor, in which you will finalise and agree the parameters and foci of the research and documentation of the project for final submission.

Depending on the scale, design and ambitions of your developing project, you may also seek additional support from other relevant academic and industry partners, and independent artists.

You will be encouraged to liaise and discuss your developing ideas with the dedicated technical members of staff where this might be a necessary consideration in your work

Relevant course materials will also be made available to you via the ELP.

All work carried out on this module is subject to Ethical Approval. With the support of your tutor, you will complete an Ethics Approval Form that is submitted for scrutiny by the Faculty Ethics Committee prior to you starting research on your project. You must gain ethical approval before you can begin working on your project.

Summative Assessment
Assessment is by Online Portfolio of Documentation pertaining to the delivery of the major project
Portfolio: 100%

You are required to collate a substantial body of documentation for your final major creative project (equivalent in length to a 15,000-word thesis) and to construct a professionally focused website to host this documentation and all other materials pertaining to the agreed project.

The online portfolio must include:
- Video documentation of the practical project
- Critical evaluation of the final project

Formative feedback will be offered verbally through tutorials with your designated supervisor.
Feedback on summative work will be delivered according to the existing protocols of the Department of Arts, with written comments on feedback sheets.
