Victoria Huntley

What course did you study for your undergraduate degree and why?

I studied a Joint Honours in Health and Social Care and Advice, Guidance and Counselling.

I chose this subject as I enjoyed it in 6th form and I was working as a Learning Support Assistant. I had thought at the time that I wanted to pursue a career as a counsellor but I changed my mind part way through the degree. I stuck with it and completed it as I still found the subject interesting but I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career in the long term.

Which postgraduate course have you chosen to study at Northumbria and why?

I studied Real Estate MSc. I joined the RICS accredited course with the goal of becoming a Chartered Surveyor.

What were your reasons for changing direction?

I was running a retail business at the time based in a busy shopping centre and was beginning to pick up some basic knowledge of commercial property and Landlord and Tenant relationships. I found this really interesting and researched careers within the industry. Becoming a commercial Property Surveyor really appealed to me and the route into the career via the Northumbria Real Estate MSc sounded exciting. I took a huge step and closed my business to return to University. I am now a Chartered Surveyor and Head of Estates at an International Airport so needless to say I haven't looked back!

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying an entirely new subject for postgraduate study?

Weigh up the pro's and con's and if it is something you want to do then absolutely go for it - the transition will be easier than you think. It is the best decision I ever made!

How did your course helping to prepare you for employment?

The course was a great first step into the industry. It was very practical with field trips, site visits and topical discussions.

Did you receive any Scholarships? If yes, how did it help with your studies? 

I did yes. It allowed me to fully concentrate on my studies full-time without having to get a part-time job.
