Student Placements

Are you looking for a cost-effective way to recruit new talent to add value to your business? Placements allow employers to benefit from our students' up-to-date knowledge and emerging leadership skills, long before they graduate. They bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, intelligence, motivation and commitment and can:

  • Drive forward a project that your organisation may not have the resources to undertake
  • Provide a cost-effective method of overcoming temporary staff shortages
  • Identify talent for your future graduate recruitment pipeline, lowering future recruitment costs
  • Provide access to up-to-date, specialist knowledge, with the support of academics who are experts in their fields and have extensive industrial or organisational experience
  • Inject new, innovative ideas in an area where you’ve identified a skills gap
  • Enabling your current staff to develop managerial and mentoring skills

Every year Northumbria students from a wide range of courses undertake optional or compulsory placements, which are a credited part of a course. Exact placement length will depend on the programme of study but typical placements are:

  • Sandwich Year Placements: a full-time placement undertaken in the third year of a four-year course, typically commencing June to September.
  • Short-term Placements of varying lengths which are limited to specified programmes of study.
  • Summer placements lasting 6-12 weeks, typically commencing in June.
  • Short-term project work, typically one to two weeks, or a few hours per week for a short-term period.

While we know students (and the placement providers) really benefit from undertaking placements because of the work experience as well as the academic credit each student can claim to support their progression through their course, we are aware placement durations and timescales don’t always match the needs of the organisation/company. If after looking at the specific placement requirements you still want to recruit a student we will be pleased to talk to you about advertising the role via our vacancy advertising system, which is free to use. Please contact us if you would like to discuss.
