What will I learn on this module?

On this semester 1 level 6 module you will explore and critically analyse the contribution made by technology and innovation to screening, diagnosis and treatment and the impact these processes have on patients of all ages, families, and communities. Using a person-centred approach, your studies will include an overview of determinants of health, including health literacy / digital health literacy, learning from events and the influence these may have upon the application of innovations for contemporary practice in Singapore. An important part of practising in a contemporary manner is to share your knowledge, therefore you will also learn how to communicate effectively to professional audiences. In so doing you will come to recognise the impact potential of the Registered Nurse as a member of a global community of practice. The module will culminate in a summative assessment where you will bring this learning together; using the information sourced you will produce a conference style poster discussing an innovation for healthcare in your area, and you will write a supporting summary conference abstract.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn by attending lectures, seminars and by undertaking online supported learning and also tutor-guided independent learning. The strategies adopted during lectures and seminars will include provision of theory and interactive discussion and debate. You will also undertake individual and small group activities. Group work will result in presentation of findings and outputs of activities undertaken. Enquiry-based learning will also be utilised. The module team will lead lectures, facilitate seminars, prepare and monitor online-supported learning activities. Students will be expected to undertake independent learning throughout the module. This will include reading, session preparation and post-session reflections to identify and address ongoing learning needs to develop skills and knowledge. Reading is emphasised; of particular relevance to this module, reading is necessary for you to appraise the merits of a variety of writing styles.
Tutor Guided materials will include interactive learning packages, electronic lectures, workbooks and media outputs. The module team will provide advice on how and when to engage in your Tutor Guided Independent Study.
To maximise your learning and to ensure application to your context-specific practice the module assessment will permit you to choose what you would like to study in more detail. For the summative assessment you will be asked to produce a conference style poster with an accompanying abstract which will be submitted via Blackboard Ultra.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will obtain support from direct dialogue with academic staff during lectures and seminars, both online and in country. You will utilise peer support during the directed study and independent study periods on the module. You will also have access to a discussion board on Blackboard Ultra, where you can post questions at any point during the module and beyond. This will be monitored regularly by a member of the module team. A group tutorial to support your summative assessment will be provided. You will have access to Northumbria University’s electronic resources to support the development of academic skills; this is aimed at improving your critical thinking and writing. These resources are aimed at improving your critical thinking, reading, and writing. The resources include e-books, e-journals and an array of databases and media outputs. You will be enrolled on Blackboard Ultra, that will provide access to module teaching materials and a reading list. You will be granted membership of the Northumbria University Library (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/home) that includes a 24/7 service catering for all your learning needs. Library membership will also give you access to academic skills development packages, accessed on-line, called Skills Plus (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/develop-learning-skills/learning-skills ). In addition, you can access Kaplan library and student support services locally.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:
Working in small peer groups you will share your ideas towards your developing poster. You will be supported to analyse and progress ideas about the elements needed to make a good poster and to consider the module assessment brief.

Summative Assessment:
You will prepare a conference style poster and a 1000-word abstract. This will be submitted via Blackboard Ultra.

Module abstract

Exploring and communicating innovations in healthcare is an important means of ensuring practice remains relevant to meet the needs of patients and populations in the 21st century specific to the country of practice. The module will use tools and techniques to source information about healthcare innovations applicable to contemporary practice. The module enhances scholarship as information gathered will be assimilated in order to produce a critical understanding of current innovations in healthcare. Methods of professional communication will be used to share your critical understanding of innovations in healthcare with your wider community of practice. Technology enhanced learning will be integral to this module and in completing the module, you will have engaged in a research-rich learning environment. The Module assessment will be a conference style poster presentation and supporting written abstract to encourage analysis and creativity; providing an opportunity to demonstrate graduate knowledge and skills that will support your career progression.
