This information is for Postgraduate applicants with Overseas fee status applying to study at Northumbria University in the academic years 26/27.

Bar Course Scholarship - Applications are now open and will close at 17:00 on Monday 09 March 2026

Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarship - For those seeking asylum in the UK and currently living within the North East of England. Specific terms and conditions apply

Early Payment Discount - £500 tuition fee discount to those who pay their deposit before 30 May 2026 for September 2026 entry and 30 October 2026 for January 2027 entry

Postgraduate UK International Scholarship - Specific terms and conditions apply. You must be currently studying at a UK institution, other than Northumbria

US Financial Aid

Northumbria University participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Programme. If you are an American student studying an Undergraduate or Masters course at Northumbria then you should apply for loans by completing a free application for Student Aid at studentloans.gov.

The FINS Education Loan Scheme developed by the EDUCATIVA Group and available to all students from an EU member state that want to study at a reputable university in Europe.

Chevening Scholarships

What are Chevening Scholarships?

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree.

Who can apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Applicants should be high calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. Chevening Scholars come from 144 countries and territories worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU).

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you must:

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country, and intend to return there after your studies;
Hold a degree that is equivalent to at least an upper second-class honours degree in the UK;
Demonstrate that you have achieved the Chevening minimum English language requirement;
Have completed at least two years’ work or equivalent experience before applying for a Chevening Scholarship;
Be able to obtain the correct visa, and receive an unconditional offer from a UK university;
Return to your home country at the end of your Scholarship.

Most Chevening Scholarships cover:

Tuition fees;
A living allowance at a set rate (for one individual);
An economy class return airfare to the UK;
Additional grants to cover essential expenditure.

Some Scholarships cover part of the cost of studying in the UK; for example, tuition fees only or allowances only.

When do applications for Chevening Scholarships open?

Applications for Chevening Scholarships open in the autumn. Exact dates will be available on the country pages of www.chevening.org.

Definitions

Home - normally, in order to be classed as a home student, you will need to have been living in the UK for at least three years for purposes other than education and have settled status. Further information can be found by referring to the UKCISA website.

Bursary – a bursary is a means tested financial award given to students who meet the criteria of the scheme. Not all bursaries are given in cash, but could be services or resources of an equivalent financial value.

Scholarship – a financial award given to eligible students who meet the terms and conditions as determined by the scheme.

Sponsorship arrangement - if your fees are being paid in full or part by another sponsor (such as an employer, charity or trust) this will be considered as a sponsorship arrangement.

Self-funding - students who are assuming full responsibility for the funding of their course. Please note students in receipt of a loan from the Student Loan Company are identified as a self-funding student.
