AP0715 - Current Research in Chemistry

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the latest research in chemistry and its impact in industry, society and the environment. You will explore research topics across inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry and their application to specific industrial, society or environmental problems. Illustrative themes include:
•Advanced Materials: synthesis, evaluation and application
•Anti-cancer agents: synthesis and evaluation
•Anti-microbial agents: synthesis, evaluation and application
•Biocatalysis: design, synthesis and application
•Chemical analysis: evaluation, application and risk in the environment
•Computational approaches to chemistry problems

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, tutorials, group workshops, guided-discovery and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises that will be discussed in tutorials and group workshops. Group and independent learning will give you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge of specific research areas.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from experienced research-active academics during small-group workshops and tutorials. In addition experienced research-active staff will guide you through the module via 1:1 discussions, facilitated group workshops and via resources on the University’s eLearning Portal (including access to extensive library research resources).

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?

This module will be assessed by
1.A teaching-focused assessment(50%) (MLO 2,3 5)
2.An industry-focused assessment(50%) (MLO 1-5).
The teaching-focused assessment involves the preparation and delivery of a level 7 lecture/tutorial on a specific research theme while the industry-focused assessment is based on a guided-discovery group exercise on a selected research problem.
Feedback:
Component 1: Written tutor feedback will be provided following the internal moderation process.
Component 2: The report will be returned with tutor feedback following the internal moderation process.
Formative assessment and guidance will be provided by both individual and group tutorials.

Module abstract

This module addresses both current developments in chemistry research as well as providing insight into future employment and career paths. Specifically the module addresses employability in terms of both a teaching focus (in Higher Education, but with transferable skills to Further Education and the Independent / Secondary School sector) and an industry focus (in chemistry-related areas).
