What will I learn on this module?
In this module you will have the opportunity to analyse and critically explore what is meant by the concept of mentoring and coaching in and education and training setting.
You will be required to develop a critical theory –practice interface in your own role as a mentor/coach and to explore key features of that role in promoting and enabling learning.
The module will also provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect on your own practice as a mentor/coach and develop your mentorship skills and knowledge, based upon sound evidenced based practice. You will also be expected to critically appraise relevant theory, literature and policy which will enable you to critically evaluate your own skills and knowledge and to subsequently act upon findings to advance knowledge, understanding and skills to a higher level.
How will I learn on this module?
Sessions will include formal lectures, seminars and group work. You will learn through lectures, seminars and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to participate in a series of guided tasks and exercises. You will work on these during seminars and practical sessions in computer labs which are fully equipped with the latest industry-standard software. The e-learning portal will provide additional learning support and enable communication between students and staff. You will be encouraged to engage with current research in this field through the critical evaluation of research papers that will then be further explored within seminars. A ‘research rich’ learning approach will enable you to build upon previous higher education and/or practice experiences.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Academic support for this module is provided by the module leader. The module leader will ensure that you receive clear guidance about the module learning outcomes and how you will be assessed against these. Individual and group tutorial time will be identified during the module. Students requiring additional support can arrange to meet, e-mail or telephone the module leader outside of module sessions. The University’s e-Learning Portal will offer remote access to materials and aids for support and learning and, in addition, tutors will respond to questions via the modules’ discussion board on the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit.
Support will also include feedback from tutors during seminars and tutorials.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

1. Demonstrate critical awareness of current issues that impact upon the role of mentor/coach in a local and wider context
2. Critically reflect upon and evaluate your own skills and knowledge in relation to mentorship and coaching
3. Use current theory to critically analyse your own development of mentorship and coaching practices and your skills of problem solving in practice.

How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment:
Presentation on the different frameworks/models of mentoring and coaching
Feedback:
There will be an opportunity in seminar sessions/ group tutorials to discuss progress and examine the interface between theory and your practice/experience.
Summative Assessment:
You will write a critical reflection in which you analyse the professional role of a mentor/coach which is supported by relevant literature which explores the theory- practice interface. (4500 words)

Module abstract
As mentoring and coaching is a supportive, long-term relationship between an experienced mentor and their less experienced mentee, it is the intention of this module to offer you the opportunity to critically explore all the key principles and practices that underpin this relationship.
Across all sectors within the education and training field there is an expectation that mentorship and coaching will form the basis of most developmental discussions to enable growth in all aspects of skills, knowledge and attitudes and also to support in the identification of career aspirations.
We will discuss the prevailing models whilst exploring alternatives. By looking at differing models, along with their concurrent ideologies, we will attempt to define specific models that will benefit practice in this sector.
