What will I learn on this module?
This module will support you in developing your personal and professional competencies as an existing or aspiring manager. You will develop your self-awareness and self-management, interpersonal skills and your abilities in working with others. You will focus specifically on developing core management and leadership skills and understanding the theories, concepts and models that underpin those skills. The broad areas covered by this module include:
Self -awareness and reflection
Interpersonal skills including emotional Intelligence
Team dynamics and team working
Communication
You will work on further enhancing your personal effectiveness by focusing on how you work effectively with others, through collaborating, influencing, and negotiating. You will have opportunities to consider ways in which leadership and management skills can be applied in a healthcare context. The importance of self- awareness and reflection will be a key feature of this module. On completion of the module, you will be able to critically analyse your own competence in relation to your professional practice or future career aspirations and present a personal development plan, which is appropriate to your chosen career context.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a range of approaches including learning via lectures, which will introduce you to core concepts and theories underpinning the different topic areas you will explore. Seminars and workshops will support you in guided learning and a deeper exploration of the key concepts you have learned from the lectures. In seminars and workshops, you will work in cross-cultural and multi professional groups. External speakers employed as Leaders or Managers in the healthcare management sector will be involved in the delivery of some lectures and seminars giving you the opportunity to discuss the application of theory and practice from their experience of managing in a healthcare setting. Learning materials and exercises to enhance and develop your learning will be available on the e-learning portal together with links to key materials. The use of formal and informal peer learning, where you share knowledge / experiences and learn from others will be used to broaden your developing your personal management and leadership skills.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module team are very experienced and will strive to facilitate your learning. You will be allocated a module tutor whom you can contact with any queries in addition to the teaching team and module lead. You will be encouraged to work collaboratively with your peers on both independent and guided learning outside of the formal setting, as this is an effective way of developing and sharing knowledge.
Additional learning resources will also be available for you to access on the e-learning portal. You will also have access to skills plus and our exceptional library services where further support can be obtained in accessing relevant resources to support you both in the subject area and to enhance your study skills. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• Critically evaluate approaches to self-awareness and self-analysis with a view to improving your personal and professional competence
• Demonstrated a critical understanding of the importance of interpersonal skills communication and working with others for managers and leaders in a healthcare setting.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• Critically analyse your own competence in relation to your current/future career.
• Demonstrate your ability to evidence how you have used a process of self-reflection to enable you to effectively develop as a manager including presenting a personal development plan appropriate to your personal career context.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Critically evaluated personal strengths and weaknesses and have demonstrated ability to engage in reflective self-development.
How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment will involve group discussion with both peers and tutors about your analysis of your own competencies and the development of a draft personal development plan .( All MLO’s)
Summative assessment will consist of a 3000 word reflective account including a personal development plan. ( All MLO’s)

Full time Courses starting in 2023 are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but may include elements of online learning. We continue to monitor government and local authority guidance in relation to Covid-19 and we are ready and able to flex accordingly to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff.
Contact time is subject to increase or decrease in line with additional restrictions imposed by the government or the University in the interest of maintaining the health and safety and wellbeing of students, staff, and visitors, potentially to a full online offer, should further restrictions be deemed necessary in future. Our online activity will be delivered through Blackboard Ultra, enabling collaboration, connection and engagement with materials and people.
