FA6020 - Portfolio & Promotion

What will I learn on this module?

The Portfolio and Promotion module is in two components.

Component 1: Promotion (40%)

Building on the brand identity established in Block 1, you will learn how to create brand communication assets through illustration, photography, digital media, and practical outcomes. A body of 2D/3D promotion work will be designed and realised to further demonstrate your Final Major Project concept. Promotional products may include but are not limited to print or digital publication and film, digital mock-ups, simulated marketing concepts, or promotional garments and accessories.

Component 2: FMP Portfolio (60%)

You will learn to create and curate a portfolio aimed at your post-graduate ambitions. This design portfolio will include research, development and illustrated final outcomes showcasing a range of advanced technical skills. The portfolio will include an illustrated marketing plan and promotional photographic styling showcasing your final major project from concept to realisation. You will reflect on your module FMP Concept and your proposed initial marketing mix. Reflecting on and refining your initial proposal, you will use illustration and graphic design to present the narrative of your marketing strategy. Your portfolio should reflect your design voice and ambitions and include a balance of hand-drawn and digital illustration, photography, typography & graphics.

National and international student competitions and graduate awards will be released throughout the year. You will be updated about these opportunities in studio presentations and online. You can use any work you produce for these briefs to enhance your graduate portfolio and extend the range of projects to appeal to potential employers.

How will I learn on this module?

You will work with our specialist academic staff and the technical team to create original promotional and design content to creatively communicate the process and realisation of your final major project brand, marketing concept and products.

You will have access to and be supported using our Photographic Studio, bookbinding and laser cutting workshop, digital labs and other relevant specialist workshops that help you realise original and exciting promotional outcomes.

Your portfolio is the culmination of your degree study and is the primary vehicle for showcasing your creative expertise as a professional. You will be expected to present an inspirational, innovative, and individual portfolio. Specialist staff will work with you through workshops, studio practice, tutorials, and technical demonstrations to support the skilled experimental use of media and emerging technology.

As a final-year student, you will be expected to work proactively and independently in the fashion studios and workshops and through self-directed study, making the most of the access available to the workshops outside of timetabled sessions with academic tutors. This module prepares you for employment by allowing you to gain specialist skills, professional attributes, and entrepreneurial capabilities.

Final-year students will have opportunities to present their work to peers and academics and, when relevant, present to the industry for feedback and potential employment opportunities. Opportunities to showcase graduate work and portfolios can be via digital platforms, competitions and awards, and local and national exhibitions. You should demonstrate professionalism, self-management, and leadership to proactively participate in these opportunities.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your module tutors will be your main source of support for your academic development. Through a mix of lectures, seminar discussions, practical workshops, and tutorials, they will provide you with the support you need to pass and succeed in each module.



At the outset of your module, you will receive a module briefing that will explain all learning outcomes and requirements. Crucially, it will also include a detailed timetable explaining the planned delivery of the module, workshops, and opportunities for support, including tutorials. You will meet your module tutors on a weekly basis.



During your modules, you will be expected to present work for feedback through group discussion with your peers, tutors, external collaborators, or stakeholders. You will also receive more individualised tutorial feedback prior to your submission to help improve your work.

In addition to your module tutors, you will be supported by various others and university services:



The Faculty provides a wide range of technical expertise to support your study. Technicians aligned with your modules will be able to provide technical instruction and demonstration of equipment and software required to complete your project work.

Library staff will provide induction sessions to introduce you to essential study skills, IT skills and information retrieval skills.

On live projects with external collaborators (or stakeholders), you may receive specific project feedback and professional career advice.

Visiting lecturers and professionals will give you greater contextual awareness and inspire you.

Academic Language Skills modules are available to help students at the Northumbria Campuses whose first language is not English or who have no experience studying in English in the UK.

3. Create fashion promotion artefacts or prototypes using specialist skills and technologies and/or interdisciplinary tools that showcase your advanced skill set.

4. Create a well-curated design portfolio and promotional material that effectively communicates skills, accomplishments, and the evolution of fashion design and marketing practice.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment

You will have the opportunity of continuous formative assessment through verbal feedback in studio sessions, self-assessment, and peer reviews.

Formative assessment will indicate the level at which you are currently achieving the relevant MLOs and offer an opportunity to discuss progress and ensure the right support is in place to achieve your goals. Formative assessment allows you to apply the feedback to your existing work and improve your competencies before your final summative assessment.

Summative Assessment

During the assessment period in weeks 9 and 10 of this module, you will prepare, present, and submit work for summative assessment. This module has two components:

Building on the brand identity established in Block 1, you will create brand communication assets through illustration, digital media and practical outcomes. To further demonstrate the student's FMP concept, a body of 2D/3D promotion work will be designed and realised.

Component 2: FMP Portfolio (60%)

A 40–60-page graduate portfolio aimed at the students post graduate ambitions.

Module abstract

As a graduate, your portfolio is the culmination of your degree study and is the primary vehicle for showcasing your creative expertise in preparation for your future goals. In this exciting and dynamic concluding module to your degree there are opportunities for final-year students to present their work to peers, academics, and industry for feedback and potential employment opportunities. Opportunities to showcase your portfolio may be through digital platforms, competitions, awards, and exhibitions.

The module is in assessed in two components: Promotion and Portfolio. Promotional products may include but are not limited to print or digital publication and film, digital mock-ups, simulated marketing concepts, or promotional garments and accessories. Expert staff will support you to design and curate your final major project and other relevant portfolio contents in an inspirational, innovative, and individual portfolio. The portfolio will include an illustrated marketing plan and promotional photographic styling of Final Major Project (FMP) products and promotion.
