What will I learn on this module?
In this module, you will learn the principles of editing and sound design, for moving image, through experimenting with editing as a tool for crafting in time and in communicating with sound, to provide a complete experience for the viewer. You will also gain an understanding of the workflow required for using editing and sound design as a fundamental basis of animation. Appropriate tools will be introduced as aids to help stimulate conceptual thinking and develop creative solutions to the brief.
You will learn techniques and practices such as screen grammar, temporal and spatial edit decisions, editing sound qualities, recording and laying tracks, working with Foley, working with software, such as Audition and Adobe Premier, as well as the principles of sound and editing. Through this you will extend your knowledge and critical appreciation of sound and the moving image, in the context of relevant theories such as the Audiovisual contract.
This project will further influence and enhance creative decision-making in future visual communication project work on the Animation programme.
How will I learn on this module?
You will be set a series of creative briefs to explore sound design and editing skills and develop your understanding of the techniques, function and role of these elements in producing convincing animation. There will be an initial set of contextual lectures, followed by technical demonstrations within workshops to introduce you to the main software and hardware skills and considerations. Contact with academic staff and the Animation Technician will enable you to develop your skills and understanding of sound design and editing, and refine your creative and technical response to the brief.
Interim formative presentations during the semester provide the opportunity for you to receive individual feedback in a peer and group setting and present work-in-progress. Summative feedback will be given in the final critique on your sound design and editing submission. This will support your confidence in presenting your work, allow you to receive constructive advice from academic tutors and to develop and realise your potential.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be taught by academic and technical staff with experience in sound design and editing packages, techniques, practices and principles. You will have access to industry standard software and training resources to support your learning on campus, along with support from the Animation Technician.
You will have bespoke tutorials aligned to your strengths and weaknesses and this will provide the opportunity to develop your understanding of sound design and editing in response to the brief and your sense of criticality with historical and contemporary animation examples and support you with formative feedback to aid you in refining your summative sound design and editing work.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate an awareness of key historical critical and contemporary issues within the animation industry.
2. Acquire a knowledge of animation production processes that underpin animation practice.

3. Effectively use tacit making skills and traditional animation techniques.

How will I be assessed?
On a weekly basis, you will be formatively assessed on your work in progress, through group crits, presentations and tutorials. You will receive verbal feedback and will address all MLOs.
There will be a mid point presentation where you will present your ideas and work in progress and receive feedback from staff and peers addressing MLOs 2 & 3.
At the end of the module you will have a final presentation and will be given verbal feedback at the critique. Written summative feedback, including the mark, will indicate how all MLOs have been addressed. You will receive the feedback within 20 working days of submission.
