What will I learn on this module?
You will undertake a set of challenging projects, including briefs set in conjunction with external institutions, which will directly support your future employment opportunities. These projects will allow you to develop industry focussed and conceptually challenging projects that demonstrate both your intellectual and creative ability and your employability in the Animation and Design fields.
A portfolio of work is a key asset developed during Level 6 and this module gives you an opportunity to refine your portfolio in a commercially focussed way.
You will be able to present research, demonstrate creative thinking and produce professional design and animation to meet the brief.
You will manage research analysis and develop ideas based on your chosen problem.
You will deliver the designs, based on appropriate production methods, which meet client needs.
How will I learn on this module?
Teaching will be by initial contextual lecture and discussion to establish an understanding of the client brief, and you will be supported to achieve autonomous learning and to establish the scope of the chosen project.
You will attend project briefings and negotiate an appropriate choice of direction through debate and discussion within seminar groups.
You will evaluate and present work in progress, throughout the duration of the project, at seminars, critiques and tutorials.
Teaching will be by the tutor, as facilitator, to support your autonomous learning, at this level, and to establish the scope of the chosen project.
Specialist teaching and support will be offered, from the breadth of staff experience, dependent upon the subject area chosen by you.
Tutor guided independent learning and independent learning, by you, will follow this process of negotiation.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module briefs outline the indicative workload of a module with an indication of lectures, design development classes and the appropriate use of design and ICT software for both the development and communication of the projects. This will include the extensive use of the eLearning Portal and the use of blogs for you to document and communicate your research and design progress.
Associated learning materials will also be available on the eLearning portal to download and support developmental skills, where appropriate. These will be discussed in class first to make sure that you understand the key concepts of the material.
Email support is available throughout the module, especially during tutor guided independent learning and student independent learning periods when you are working alone. You can also make appointments to talk through your work with a member of staff.
The programme has a subscription to ‘Digital Tutors’, the design and technical software support facility, due to the specialist nature of the software that you are required to use. You will have access to this resource, both inside and outside the university, to help with any problem solving when designing. You will be encouraged to solve your own design and technical problems by searching for solutions in Digital Tutors.
The programme has a dedicated design studio, specialist hardware including high-end computers, rendering facilities, stop-motion rigs and a colour 3D printer, plus industry standard software such as Maya and Renderman.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Independent planning, organisation and the management of effective research and development in order to acquire new critical, practical or professional knowledge in order to effectively tackle the chosen project.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Effective communication and presentation of complex ideas through clear design thinking.
3. Production of professional standard animation and design that effectively communicates the intention of the project.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. 4. Evidence of critical engagement and reflection on real-world issues and the clear communication of a design solution based on group discussions and teamwork, as appropriate.
How will I be assessed?
You will present your proposed design solutions in a group presentation during the semester, and you will receive formative feedback based on MLO 4.
You will effectively communicate your design solutions, at the mid-point presentation and final presentations stages, both verbally and visually and addressed by MLO 2. You will receive formative feedback from both staff and peers at these stages.
You will deliver a final piece of work which is of a professional standard that meets the design needs of the brief. This will be presented during the final presentation and you will receive formative feedback from both staff and peers - addressed by MLO 3.
You will also demonstrate your ability to design, organise and manage the project in a professional manner and this will be demonstrated throughout the project during tutorials and documented in the final delivery, addressing MLO 1.
The work will be reviewed again by staff after the formal presentation, and the work will be summatively assessed. Summative feedback will be provided on the standard Faculty assessment template which records your achievement against the MLOs and a final grade. Feedback will be provided within 20 working days of submission.
Your work should be submitted via the eLearning Portal. On the module page in the eLearning Portal, there is a folder called ‘Assignment Submission’ you will find all the necessary links in this folder.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
