What will I learn on this module?
The module provides students with an understanding of concepts, theories, and frameworks that are relevant to strategic decision making, the dynamics of global strategy, and enhanced performance in international business. The module combines theoretical and managerial insights on international business strategy to provide knowledge and understanding of what happens in complex international business settings. The module content will cover core international business concepts, and strategic options available to managers. It will also cover strategic decision making in relation to functional areas and how to improve business performance across borders. Students will develop knowledge and ability to critically analyses and apply models of international business strategy to cross-border operations.
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be delivered through weekly teaching and learning activities comprising one lecture (1 hour) and one seminar (2 hours), every week throughout the semester. The lectures will focus on introducing the theoretical knowledge whereas the seminars will give students opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge and develop managerial insights into international business practice through individual and group activities. The students will be provided with feedback by the tutor on their work with guidance on how they can perform well in the module assessment.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Students will be supported by a team of dedicated subject experts including the Module Tutor and members of the teaching team through lectures, seminars, formative, and summative assessments. Lectures and seminars will be delivered in accordance with the students’ timetable. Students will be provided access to the Blackboard site (elp) where the relevant learning materials including, the teaching and learning plan, lectures slides, seminar briefs, assessment briefs and the reading list will be available. In addition to the weekly lecture and seminar, students will be able to contact and arrange a one-to-one appointment with members of the teaching team if required.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1 To develop in-depth knowledge of the core concepts, theoretical frameworks, and issues in international business strategy (MLO1)
2. To understand the dynamics of global strategy to market selection and entry (MLO2)
3. Enhance students understanding of how managers make decisions, develop, and maintain competitive advantage across different countries (MLO3)
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
4. Enhance students’ skills in analysing, communicating, and reporting effectively through verbal and written format (MLO4)
How will I be assessed?
The students learning will be assessed via Formative and Summative assessment
Formative Assessment:
The Lectures and seminar sessions will be interactive with students being encouraged to ask questions and be able to get feedback. In the seminar sessions especially, students will be required to participate in group tasks, e.g., discussion, presentations, and debate. This will also allow the students to develop their skills and knowledge via collaboration and peer learning. Feedback to enhance the students learning will be provided by the seminar tutor.
Summative Assessment
The students will be required to submit a 100% weighted final assignment to be presented as an individual piece of work. The assignment will be designed to test to engage in research and critical evaluation of case-based scenarios with links to relevant international business strategy frameworks. The assignment will reflect the theoretical frameworks discussed in the module learning sessions. Feedback on the written assignment will be provided within the university timelines.

Module abstract
Competent firm strategists are expected (to) develop a high sense of direction and an understanding of what their firms must do in order to be successful when engaging in cross-border operations. In this module, students will develop in-depth knowledge of the core concepts, theoretical frameworks, and issues in international business strategy. Students will be supported to learn about the dynamics of global strategy in terms of market selection and entry modes. Through the module’s learning tasks, students will enhance their understanding of how managers make decisions, develop, and maintain competitive advantage across different countries.
