Enrolment

All students must be enrolled in order to study at Northumbria. All students are required to enrol annually and agree to the University terms and conditions. Home students can complete their enrolment process online. Students requiring a Right to Study* check (mostly International students) must undertake a two-step enrolment process.

Pre-Registration and Enrolment

To pre-register or enrol you need to log into the Student Portal, click on the ‘Enrol’ button on the main left-hand menu and follow the onscreen instructions.

You will need your username and password, which you should have already received by email, and have a digital passport-style photograph ready to upload for your University Smartcard. When you have completed this process successfully you will receive a confirmation email to your University email account. See our How to Enrol guides below for more information.

Students must aim to enrol and arrive by their course start date and are expected to attend programme induction activities. Full enrolment provides access to systems and teaching timetables, you are advised to complete enrolment as soon as possible. If you fail to enrol by your course enrolment deadline, your record will be closed for non-enrolment.

*Some Home students may be subject to Right to Study checks.

International and EU* Students arriving in the UK

Online pre-registration is a preliminary stage to visa documentation being verified once you arrive in the UK and completing your full enrolment. Online enrolment and pre-registration are quick and easy tasks, which enable you to commence your studies and access many essential aspects of University life, such as our IT Systems, the Library and the Students' Union.

Please ensure that you have a current UK address - this is a mandatory requirement of enrolling. Your address will be stored securely with restricted access. You can update you address details in the Contact Details tab on your Student Portal at any time.

Following pre-registration and to be enrolled on your course, you are required to upload your visa documents via the ‘Visa Upload’ task in your Student Portal. Visa verification is mandatory where Right to Study checks are required – the required documents will have been detailed in your enrolment email. Please allow up to five working days for document checks to be completed - you will receive a notification email once complete which will then confirm your enrolment. Do not travel unless you can enter the UK by the course enrolment deadline. Please see our Enrolment Guide for International Students for further information.

Arrangements regarding Smartcard collection are updated on a regular basis, you are advised to visit your Student Portal for the latest information.

New students must arrive and enrol by their course start date, as stated in your offer letter, and attend all course induction activities.

Failure to enrol on time will result in your record being closed for non-enrolment, leading to losing access to university systems.

To inform or discuss any enrolment concerns with us, please submit an enquiry via the Understanding the enrolment process article on your Student Portal. If you do not have access to your Portal, please use this contact form.

  • Returning students should re-enrol annually before any scheduled learning activities.
  • Re-enrolment is available from the start of the new academic year for students who have successfully completed the previous year of study, including any resits.
  • Re-enrolling confirms your student status for financial support and ensures continued access to university systems and services.
