On November 12, 2024, 10th North East Energy Materials and Systems Meeting (NEEMS 10) brought together 80 industry leaders, academics, policymakers, and ReNU PhD students at St. James' Park.

NEEMS 10 showcased the power of collaboration between academia and industry, highlighting innovative PhD projects co-developed with organizations such as the NHS, Northumbrian Water, Procter & Gamble, Johnson Matthey and Mitsubishi. These projects addressed pressing challenges with practical solutions, such as improving air quality around hospitals, developing resilient water networks using renewable energy and AI, and pioneering living bionic leaves for solar fuel production.

The event also offered opportunities for dialogue through engaging roundtable discussions on topics including securing funding for energy innovation, leveraging AI and IoT for energy management, and preparing the workforce to meet net-zero goals. Attendees gained insights from thought-provoking talks by industry leaders, including Andrew Crossland (Future Zero Consulting) on scalable pathways to net-zero electricity and Ellie Grimes (Durham County Council) on achieving carbon neutrality at a regional scale. In addition, Tom Bradley (Decerna) demonstrated how Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) can help to optimise sustainability strategies, while Stuart Bowman (Dalkia) provided practical approaches to decarbonizing heat systems.

NEEMS was not just an event—it is a platform for fostering meaningful collaborations and identifying research and practical solutions that industry leaders and ReNU PhD students can act on.

Looking Ahead: NEEMS 11 is scheduled for November 2025. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to join this impactful gathering.
