AC6741 - Research as Evidence for Nursing Practice

What will I learn on this module?

This module occurs in Year 1 Semester 1 of the BSc Nursing Programme. In this module you will be supported and encouraged to engage with published research and other types of evidence that inform nursing practices. You will be given the opportunity to explore research terminology, methodologies and methods through the consideration of relevant research studies in an Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) approach. The aims of the module will be to support and develop your knowledge about research to increase your confidence as a consumer of the research evidence underpinning nursing practice. Skills will be developed that allow appreciation of the variety of approaches used in healthcare research and you will be able to critically examine the quality of research and discuss the value within your nursing practice.

On this module you will explore the following topic areas:

* Life-Long Learning and Professional Practice: The introduction of evidence to inform nursing practice. Ethical issues in research.
* Research methodological approaches and their value to nursing and healthcare practice: methodologies and methods used in research. Critical evaluation / appreciation of research quality.
*Qualitative approaches to research exploring qualitative methodology, analysis and interpretation of qualitative evidence and its strengths or weaknesses.
*Quantitative approaches to research, common statistical tests and tools, analysis and interpretation of quantitative statistics and their application
*Mixed method approaches, understanding the place for this approach in research, strengths and applications.
*Data Management and Metrics: Research Governance, ethics and protecting vulnerable people.
*Evidence Based Practice: This will include debate around the hierarchies of research evidence and the production of protocols and guidelines that inform nursing practice.

This module will enable you to develop life-long learning skills that will benefit your future career pathway in nursing.

How will I learn on this module?

This level 6 module will employ a blended approach to learning comprising a variety of different approaches to learning and teaching to ensure that students’ different learning styles are taken into account. Formal lectures provide the underpinning knowledge and theory. In seminars you will use Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) to work with your colleagues to discuss topics and to find answers to challenging questions. This module also contains several workshop sessions where you will work through exercises in small groups using authentic scenarios based on nursing and health related research-based subjects. Digitally recorded clips from suitable websites will be used to support authentic learning and a series of formative activities within the accompanying workbook will help support the summative appraisal and verbal presentation (video) of a chosen research article to be submitted and digitally uploaded at the end of the module. This module is supported with materials on Blackboard Ultra where you will find all your teaching materials and additional information to help you learn. You can listen again to key lectures which have been recorded and are stored on the E Learning Portal. In addition, the reading lists will highlight to you the texts that will be of use in supporting your journey on this module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will obtain support from direct dialogue with academic staff during lectures and seminars, both online and in country. You will utilise peer support during the directed study and independent study periods on the module. You will also have access to a discussion board on Blackboard Ultra, where you can post questions at any point during the module and beyond. This will be monitored regularly by a member of the module team. A group tutorial to support your summative assessment will be provided. You will have access to Northumbria University’s electronic resources to support the development of academic skills; this is aimed at improving your critical thinking and writing. These resources are aimed at improving your critical thinking, reading, and writing. The resources include e-books, e-journals and an array of databases and media outputs. You will be enrolled on Blackboard Ultra, that will provide access to module teaching materials and a reading list. You will be granted membership of the Northumbria University Library (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/home) that includes a 24/7 service catering for all your learning needs. Library membership will also give you access to academic skills development packages, accessed on-line, called Skills Plus (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/develop-learning-skills/learning-skills ). In addition, you can access Kaplan library and student support services locally.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment:
The aim of the formative assessment is to help prepare students for their summative assignment workbook.
Each week formative activities guide students towards the required activity within the workbook during classroom exercises and directed study.

There will be peer and faculty feedback and feed forward.

Summative Assessment:
The student will submit a 20-minute recorded video presentation to Blackboard Ultra. The students will choose either a qualitative or quantitative article relating to their practice and give a verbal presentation systematically appraising the article. Students may utilise a research appraisal tool. The focus of the presentation will centre upon how the research can impact on clinical practice.

Written feedback and feedforward will be provided via Blackboard Ultra.

Module abstract

The knowledge you will gain in this module will help to support the rest of your learning within the BSc Nursing Programme and will be essential to your role as an Evidence Based Nurse Practitioner throughout, helping to inform life-long learning principles. This is a very ‘hands on’ module where you will explore how research is constructed and how it can be used to inform nursing practice. The ranges of research knowledge taught will extend to an appreciation of qualitative and quantitative methods, to include shaping the students understanding and analysis of qualitative and quantitative research; how to interpret the quality of research evidence and its application to nursing and wider health care. In the presentation of quantitative methods, the students will learn common approaches to statistical methods and statistical tests and be guided as to understanding their application and appreciate how these are applied in research. In addition, the students will be taught how to combine these approaches using a mixed method approach to research and understand the implicit strength and benefits to this methodology in research.
