What will I learn on this module?
This module will develop student’s abilities to present, articulate and disseminate research ideas through several modes of delivery. Building upon the knowledge and skills encountered and developed in preceding modules, students will explore some of the ways peer support and appraisal forms part of the research journey. Students will gain experience of critically assessing research ideas by examining potential research through an ethical, practical and theoretical frameworks, fostering an understanding of the ways in which research and academic work is appraised. Through a simulation of different but complementary research forums, students will be exposed to the rigors of delivering research ideas through contexts experienced by researchers and academics. This will prepare students in disseminating their research through a variety of methods. Students will refine their research ideas to construct a research proposal for presentation to possible supervisors.
How will I learn on this module?
Teaching and learning activities will facilitate exploration of different aspects of research discussion, design, proposal and dissemination. Critical appraisal will facilitate understanding of the theoretical, practical and professional aspects of your research journey. Students will be encouraged to share their study challenges and successes, understanding and experiences and how these shape the social construction of individual’s perceptions of their work. The module aims to enable you to develop an effective and successful research proposal to present to your peer group.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will work in small groups and receive 1:1 tutorial support in discussing material, identifying research areas and constructing the assignment and written component. Students will be signposted to relevant reading and materials which will inform activities and are encouraged to engage with social media in following professional advances and aspects, which inform policy and practice. Taught sessions will be made available through Panopto.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment:
Formative assessment will take place via group tasks and discussions throughout the module

Feedback will be verbal by both tutor and peers.
Summative Assessment: Pass/Fail
A 30-minute peer observed presentation of your research proposal on an aspect of professional practice and which will outline the possible impact your project has for practice within your professional context.

Module abstract
The primary focus of this module is the design and presentation of your proposed research to a critical audience. This module facilitates students to identify pathways that allow for research to be carried out from the concept stage through to having a direct impact on professional practice. Building upon the skills and knowledge acquired through the preceding modules, this module will develop individual’s critical, practical and academic skills to be able to appraise aspects of your own and other’s research projects, and to be able to refine and ultimately deliver them in an academically impactful way. The culmination of this module will be the presentation of your own research proposal which will allow you to engage in an academic conversation as to its suitability and potential to deliver positive impact on your own and other’s professional practice, and will equip you to move to the research project stage.
