Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

Northumbria has a lot to provide for students who want more of their time at university. Practical approaches to studies wherever possible. With sports, theatre and music on my list of many commitments, Northumbria has them all.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Newcastle has a big nightlife, as most people know, but if you don't want to go out clubbing there is a lot of quiet bars. Northumbria campus is right in the centre of town so makes it the perfect location for students. Favourite things to do mainly involve meeting new people and trying out new things especially in sports.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

The ability to get around without a car. From the university, everything is within walking distance or a short Metro ride away. The Metro goes almost everywhere you need to in Newcastle. Many 2nd and 3rd year students live in Jesmond and Heaton, which are also within walking distance of the university.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

The university treats every student as an individual, incredibly welcoming. In order to meet more people, you should get involved with societies and/or sports teams. Friendships are formed very quickly and there are people you will never forget.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Being able to do all the leisure activities I enjoy while studying. I play American Football for the Northumbria University Mustangs, part of various societies including NUMTS (Musical Theatre), and currently am the Faculty Representative for Health and Life Sciences at the university. It is easy to do all of these things while still making your studies a priority at Northumbria.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

Combination of the lecturers and students. Friends who have similar interests help each other reach the same goal and lecturers always want the students to achieve their absolute best.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Personal tutor. As soon as I entered his office, I saw an array of race numbers and endurance race entries. If a university lecturer can do all that alongside a full time job then I can definately do so much more than just study.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Habita, the student union bar on campus. Open almost all day, it is a great place to meet up with friends, do a bit of work, or just relax.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

Northumbria Mustangs, NUMTS (musical theatre), Course Rep for Level 4 Psychology. Highlights have to include being a part of the Mustangs (American Football). Great group of guys all about discipline and playing hard.

What is the best thing about your course?

Choice and Chance. Options for incredibly interesting modules for second year, opportunities for placements and teaching.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

You get what you give with university. If you put the effort in, the university gives you so much more.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

Counselling Psychology or Teaching. Presentation and communication are incredibly important skills which I am already improving on.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Be involved. Nothing happens unless you make it so.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I am definately far more proactive and more organised. Juggling many commitments forces you to be so. Especially when your studies are your main priority. The nights out become few and far between but you relish the celebration of having all that work done.
