Student Name: Andrew Toh

Course: LLB (Hons)

Home Country: Malaysia

I chose Northumbria... because I always fancied going to a modern university and Northumbria is one of the leading modern universities in the UK. For my course, it is ideal to be involved in a lot of practical experience and what appealed to me about Northumbria Law School is how they have incorporated the opportunity to gain practical experience in the course structure. It seemed that the law clinic here would give students a very real experience of what it’s going to be like when they get into their professional lives.

Newcastle is... A student city and all the students are very helpful towards each other. The environment is really good and you will feel like it’s one of the safest cities in the UK.

My favourite thing about Newcastle is... The weather. I really liked the winter here and now I’m looking forward to spring and summer.

My favourite thing about the course is... the time table. It gives you a lot of gaps in between the classes and seminars so I get time to revise, work on my assignments and learn more things. Also if I ever miss a lecture, I can use this time to catch up on the topics I have missed.

When I am not studying... I work in a restaurant in China town. I also like sports and I play ultimate Frisbee In the University. At the moment we are setting up a Frisbee team for Northumbria.

My tutors... are highly qualified. They have deep understanding of the subjects they teach. Their guidance for me is always very helpful.

The different student services... have always been very beneficial. Initially I was helped by the Meet and Greet staff who picked me up from the airport and helped me on my very first day here. Afterwards I have used the Careers and Employment Centre and Student Support and Wellbeing quite a lot of times. They are always willing to give advice. The career events that I have attended were very informative. All the firms that visit the university are very prominent firms in the industry and they provide us with a huge range of career opportunities.

Favourite thing about University... is the library. The environment in the library is very encouraging for studies.

During my time here, I learned... that if you want something, you can always achieve it with hard work. It's important to set goals for yourself and then to work hard for achieving those goals.

My advice to the prospective students... would be to stay in the university accommodation for the first year at least. It would be easier for them to settle down and they wouldn't have to worry about bills, different facilities and finding flatmates.

My time in Northumbria so far has been... Challenging, inspiring and rewarding.
