I always had an interest in sport from playing to coaching to being a fitness instructor, however nothing really grabbed my enthusiasm until I began looking into the business of sport. I researched possible areas to study and Sport Management at Northumbria University was the best fit. The course covered a variety of topics which gave me a great understanding of the industry and the relaxed city allowed me to build an enjoyable life away from all the studying.

What are you doing now?

After internships in a variety of areas I am worked within the sponsorship department of a football club.  The variety within the job is fantastic and kept me enthused to keep learning and further myself.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals / give your career an edge?

Northumbria provided all the tools for you to better yourself, the tools were not handed to you and you were not fed the information but they were there for you to use. With a level of initiative and determination Northumbria allows a student many opportunities to enhance their CVs above that of many other universities and courses.

What was the best thing about your course?

By far the best parts of the course were the real-life scenarios that the course exposed us to. Both the working placement and event management modules allowed us to experience real working situations and apply what we had learnt.  Every interview I attended post graduation was filled with strong discussion points around the work placement and event management modules.

Who inspired you the most, and why?

I was enthused by all the staff members, and the open and can-do attitude of the tutors allowed me to expand my thinking and aim high.  The mix of overseas students integrated into the course also allowed us to see aspects from a completely different viewpoint.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now/throughout your career?

Leadership and communication, a solid understanding of the industry, a confidence that with hard work I could achieve what I wanted.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

It was a pleasure to live in the city of Newcastle; a city of great variety with an amazing atmosphere.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Take a warm coat, a sense of humour and an open mind.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Fulfilling, fun and motivating.
