What are you doing now?Muhendran Baskanin

I am currently working as a Paramedic in pre-hospital care in the Emergency Department at Pulau Pinang Hospital, this involves attending emergency cases in the hospital such as accidents, assaults and medical cases.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The fact that it was able to give me professional knowledge regarding managing crowds of patients and managing the flow of an emergency department.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

There were a mix of lectures which provided the opportunity for me to perform as team leader in assignments and projects. The University also gave good skills for handling stress whilst completing  our projects.

How connected was your course with industry?

I completed my dissertation in the triage counter at a local hospital and this provided a turning point to venture into a lot of new things in my studies.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

I chose to work in a department at a government hospital in Malaysia, this provided me with positive thoughts and knowledge which I then used in my dissertation and studies.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

I was able to complete a placement with the help and support from my lecturers which allowed me to gain more experience. The course has also allowed me to choose topics which may be beneficial to the area of clinical psychology.

What was the best thing about your course?

I learnt about management and professional triage in a hospital Emergency Department.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Upon completion of my degree I proceeded to move up a number of increments in my post to work at a higher level.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Pre-hospital care and trauma and management in emergency cases.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

The communications I had with a lot professionals and lecturers as well as the mix lectures.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

This is the best place to continue your studies and there is a lot of further knowledge to be gained from this University.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Never stop learning.
