Career Path: Senior Marketing Executive, Tombola
Location: Sunderland, UK

Travel and Tourism was my main passion and I studied this subject for several years, the highest qualification being a Higher National Diploma in Travel and Tourism. After I completed this course, my friends and I went travelling across Europe. At this point, we were unsure careers wise what we wanted to do in life, we simply wanted to travel but obviously needed a ‘real job’ but we simply were not ready to commit to a proper full time job.

When returning home, my friends decided that they would carry on their studies within the tourism sector but I was unsure as the job opportunities seemed limited. I spent some time reviewing potential courses and marketing had my name all over it. Part of my HND involved marketing and this was my forte and I knew at this point, I had to take the challenge. I enrolled at Northumbria University and studied a BA (Hons) Marketing Management degree for three years.

What are you doing now?Jennifer Flood

I am Senior Marketing Executive for a successful online gaming company, tombola.co.uk. Soon after graduating in 2008, I applied for a Marketing Assistant role at Tombola and since then, my role has progressed. I was Marketing Assistant for three years. I was then promoted to Marketing Executive and a year later, I was promoted to Senior Marketing Executive. I’m in a fortunate position that this role covers all aspects of the marketing mix. I manage a marketing budget of £20m+ across above and below the line advertising including TV, radio, print, display and direct mail. My role is to plan the media as well as produce the creative, so day to day, my job is incredibly varied and challenging.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Location was key as I helped care for my mum so I needed a place that was within a short radius. I had a choice of three institutions, Northumbria, Sunderland and Gateshead. When comparing the three, Northumbria stood out as it had so much to offer. The credibility and facilities such as the library really sold it to me.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

I absolutely loved Northumbria. There was a real mix of everything and the lectures were an asset. They had a passion for what they did and this really encouraged me to focus so much more as they believed that we could succeed and have a successful career. I enjoyed my time so much at university that I hope to become a course lecturer in the foreseeable future.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

After gaining this qualification, this enhanced my confidence and made me even more focused on my chosen career path.
