Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Business and Law

Professor Robert MacIntosh is Pro Vice Chancellor for the faculty of Business and Law at Northumbria University.

Robert provides strategic, disciplinary and wider leadership and vision for the faculty and its academic departments, leading and promoting cross University working and strategic external partnerships, enabling empowered people to succeed and be the best they can, and supporting an inclusive, innovative and high performing culture.

Robert is responsible for the overall performance of the faculty, including all aspects of academic provision, achieving targets and objectives for the Faculty and University, and for the management, leadership and effective deployment of the faculty’s resources and estate.

As Professor of Strategic Management, he also supports the shaping and delivery of the University’s Vision, Strategy 2030 and supporting plans.

Business and Law directly support the combined Strategy 2030 commitments to enhance the volume and quality of Northumbria’s research (creating new knowledge) and to provide experiential learning to all undergraduate students, through the Business Clinic and the Student Law Office (powering an inclusive economy) and to drive social mobility. Robert is Northumbria University’s Senior Sponsor for Disability, supporting the 2030 strategic ambition to be a place of fairness, where all people belong.

Prior to joining Northumbria, Robert held leadership roles in business schools at Strathclyde, Glasgow and Heriot-Watt and held a range of roles outside of the Higher Education sector. He has extensive experience working with, facilitating, and researching strategy in a range of publicly traded firms, large public organisations and third sector organisations and has supervised a number of senior leaders from the US, Canada, Europe and the UK to doctoral completion.

He is currently Chair of the Chartered Association of Business Schools and sits on the Board of the devolved tax authority, Revenue Scotland. Robert is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the British Academy of Management.

Robert attended Saint Patricks secondary school in Dumbarton before achieving his PhD in Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde in 1994.

His research interests include strategy, leadership, change management, research methods and EDI in research and innovation careers. He has published over one hundred outputs including books on strategy, organisational change and research impact and has a long-standing interest in multidisciplinary research that makes a difference in the world.
