Head Of School

School: Sport Exercise and Rehabilitation

Dr Marc Briggs is Associate Head of School for Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, where he leads the School’s strategic portfolio for International and Educational Partnerships. Marc leads and develops strategic collaborations with professional sport organisations, governing bodies, and international HEIs, supporting the creation of distinctive educational provision, applied learning opportunities, and initiatives that enhance global engagement and international student recruitment.

Marc’s academic expertise centres on sport science and performance, with teaching contributions across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in sports nutrition and applied performance. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a graduate of Northumbria University. His doctoral research examined the dietary habits of adolescent academy football players in collaboration with Sunderland AFC, developing innovative methods to assess energy availability and identifying evidence of sub-optimal nutritional intake in elite youth athletes. This work informed applied intervention strategies designed to optimise performance nutrition within high-performance sport environments.

Alongside his academic leadership, Marc remains actively engaged in applied practice. He is an accredited Sport and Exercise Nutritionist (SENr) and currently provides consultancy support to professional sport organisations and elite athletes. Through his combined leadership, research, teaching, and consultancy activity, Marc’s work focuses on advancing the integration of higher education, industry, and elite performance environments to deliver impactful, globally relevant sport education and partnerships.
