Dr Biddy Casselden

Assistant Professor

Department: Computer and Information Sciences

Biddy -CasseldenI have worked at Northumbria University for over 20 years, but have a link with the institution that spans 30 years, having originally studied here in 1986.  I have a broad initial work based experience which included stints in local government, the civil service and as a secondary school teacher.  I then focussed my career by taking a Masters in Information and Library Management, and worked in a variety of posts including research associate, resources support officer, newspaper library information manager, study skills centre manager and academic librarian, before finally taking up a lecturing post at Northumbria in 2001.

My teaching interests are wide ranging, but I currently lecture in the areas of management, marketing and research methods across a range of courses.

I have recently successfully completed my Professional Doctorate in Information Science, which examined stakeholder opinions regarding the use of volunteers in public libraries. I am particularly interested in research areas including the longevity of volunteer use in public services in libraries, the public library as an inclusive space, information literacy topics, student engagement with ebooks, and the future of the library profession’.

I am a chartered member of CILIP, and involve myself professionally at a regional level through membership of the NE CILIP ARLG Committee (Academic and research Library Group).
