Dr Madeline Carter

Madeline Carter is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. She joined Northumbria University as a Senior Lecturer in 2018 and teaches on the MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology programme.

Madeline’s research has investigated workplace bullying in the NHS, selection and professionalism in healthcare, training and learning, and the quality and delivery of medical education; often working in partnership with NHS organisations. She is particularly interested in developing and evaluating workplace bullying interventions. Research has been commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care, National Institute for Health Research, General Medical Council, NHS Employers, Health and Care Professions Council, Medical Schools Council, Health Education England and the North East & Yorkshire Leadership Academy. Madeline's research draws on multiple approaches from organisational psychology, and seeks to shape policy and practice in the workplace.

Madeline was educated at the University of Cambridge and completed her MA and PhD at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Prior to taking a position at Northumbria University, she was Associate Director of the Centre for Medical Education Research at Durham University, Senior Research Associate in the School of Medical Education at Newcastle University, Research Associate at the Northern Deanery, and a Consultant at Zeal Solutions.
