Dr Jing Jiang

Associate Professor

Department: Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

Dr. Jing Jiang is an Associate Professor and Head of Subject (Electrical Engineering) in the Department of Mathematics, Physics & Electrical Engineering, and joined the University of Northumbria at Newcastle in Sept. 2018. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Edinburgh (U.K.) in 2011. From 2011 to 2014, she was a Research Fellow in the Institute for Communication Systems at the University of Surrey, where she was involved in the 5G Innovation Centre as a main researcher for the key work area of New Air-interface, and performed research on energy efficient 5G wireless communication systems. From 2015 to 2018, she was a Research Associate in the Department of Engineering at the University of Durham, and performed research on information and communication technologies in smart grids. At Durham, she was involved in the EU H2020-MSCA project "TESTBED" (2017-2019, €882k), the EPSRC project "TOPMOST" (2016-2018, £101k), the EU H2020 project "SmartEMC2" (2015-2017, €3.8M), and the ERDF project "SWIi" (2017-2019, £2.5M).

Now she is Northumbria Principal Investigator (PI) for:

  • EU “TESTBED2” project (2020-2025, ID: 872172) with a total €1.46M funding from the EU under H2020 Marie Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange programme, testing and evaluating sophisticated information and communication technologies for enabling scalable smart grid deployment. https://www.testbed2.org
  • UKRI “VPP-WARD” Project (05/2023-03/2026, EP/Y005376/1) with a total £1.84M funding from UKRI to work on Virtual Power Plant with Artificial intelligence (AI) for Resilience and Decarbonisation and to help the UK meet its Net Zero targets. https://www.vppward.com
  • UKRI's first-round of cross research council responsive mode "SAT-Guard" project (01/2025-12/2026) with a total £1M funding from UKRI to work on Satellite-aided technologies for advancing resilience and guarding energy services under climate hazards, risks, and disasters. News: Satellites could hold the key to keeping the lights turned on
  • EPSRC Federated Telecoms Hub 6G Research Partnership Funds "SustainAIRA6G" Project (07/2024-03/2025) to work on energy-efficient sustainable AI-driven resource allocation for 6G-empowered Edge-Fog-Cloud Continuum.

Dr Jing Jiang is now an EPSRC-WES Ambassador for Women in Engineering. Her current research interests include data-driven energy scheduling, consumer-centric decarbonisation, AI and digital twins in future energy systems. She has been involved in a number of activities with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): She is serving (or served) as a technical program committee (TPC) member for many IEEE flagship conferences, e.g., IEEE ICC, IEEE VTC, and IEEE/CIC ICCC. She is a peer reviewer for a number of IEEE prestigious journals. She is on the Editorial Board of IET Smart Grid Journal as a Subject Editor, IET Communications Journal as an Associate Editor (2019-2022), and EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking as an Associate Editor.
