Dr Md Apel Mahmud

Associate Professor

Department: Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

Dr. Apel Mahmud received his PhD in Electrical Engineering with the best thesis award from the University of New South Wales, Australia in December 2012 and a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from RUET in 2008 with the University Gold Medal. Currently, he is working as an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering at Northumbria University Newcastle. Prior to joining Northumbria, he worked as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Electrical & Renewable Energy Engineering at Deakin University, Australia. He also worked as a Lecturer in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology, a research fellow at the University of Melbourne, and a research publication fellow at the University of New South Wales.

He has been successful in obtaining seven externally funded projects, which attracted more than AUD12.6 million in total as listed below:
- ARC Training Centre in New Energy Technologies for Future Grids; Role: Theme Leader; Amount: AUD5,000,000; Source: ARC; & Duration: Jul 2021 to Dec 2026.
- Performance Analysis of Compensated Distribution Networks in Bushfire Prone Areas (Stage 2); Role: Sole CI; Amount: AUD193,000; Source: AusNet Services; and Duration: Jun 2021 to Jun 2023.
- Performance Analysis of Compensated Distribution Networks in Bushfire Prone Areas (Stage 1); Role: Sole CI; Amount: AUD150,000; Source: DELWP Victoria; & Duration: Jun 2021 to Jun 2022.
- Robust Distributed Intelligent Controller Design for Distributed Energy Resources in Microgrids; Role: Sole CI; Amount: AUD15,600; Source: Australian Academy of Science; & Duration: Jun 2019 to Sep 2019.
- New Australian performance standards for home battery storage systems; Role: Second Lead CI; Amount: AUD1,900,000; Source: ARENA & DELWP; & Duration: Jul 2018 to Dec2020.
- NOJA Power’s intelligent network control device to capture real-time data on energy networks; Role: Fifth CI; Amount: AUD5,000,000; Source: Australian Renewable Energy Agency; & Duration: Jun 2018 to Dec 2020.
- Transient Analysis and Bushfire Mitigation of Power Lines for AusNet Services; Role: Lead CI; Amount: AUD703,679; Source: AusNet Services; & Duration: Jun 2015 to Dec 2020.

Over 11 years, he published more than 240 research articles in the form of journals (~90), conferences (>140), book chapters (8), and edited books (2). All of his research articles have been published with high-quality publishers like IEEE, Elsevier, and Springer.
