ADSS Jamesstreet Facultystaff 255 I graduated with BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Sheffield where my research interests were in the (complex) relationship between language and social disadvantage. Following my BA graduation I gained a Trinity (Cambridge) Cert. TESOL and spent the next seven years teaching as an ESOL/EFL tutor at a variety of institutions in Britain, Europe and the Far East. In 2004 I was awarded an MA (with distinction) in Applied Linguistics, again from the University of Sheffield. It was during this period that I began the first of a number of collaborations with Ewa Dąbrowska investigating individual variation in language attainment. In 2006 I won an AHRC PhD studentship to continue research into individual differences, which I completed within three years at the University of Sheffield’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics.
