Professor Ioannis Vogiatzis

Professor

Department: Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

Ioannis -Vogiatzis ,-Northumbria -University -webOver the past five years he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Physiology (an official journal of the American Physiological Society) and the journal of Respiratory Physiology and Neurobiology.

Ioannis is considered an opinion leader in the area of Pulmonary Rehabilitation holding the Chair of the Rehabilitation and Chronic Care group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He has contributed to three Position Statements of the American Thoracic and European Respiratory Societies on Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction and Daily Physical Activity in patients with chronic lung diseases.  Recently on behalf of the American and European Respiratory Societies, he co-chaired an international task force producing a Policy Statement for enhancing implementation, use and delivery of Pulmonary Rehabilitation globally.

Besides his background in Physiology and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Ioannis has a long truck working and studying elite athletes.  For eight years he served as a member of the Medical Commission of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and participated as head physiologist for the Greek Sailing Federation in the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). He has published several papers on the physiological limitations of performance of Olympic Class sailors.

Ioannis has a very good record of research funding generation mainly from EU and pharmaceutical industry sources on projects covering aspects of physical activity, pulmonary rehabilitation, telemedicine, respiratory mechanics, phenotypic and genotypic skeletal muscle profiling and computed aided rehabilitation. He has published over 100 papers having an H index of 30. He has made a chapter contribution to the contemporary version of the “Textbook of Physiology” (Comprehensive Physiology) and successfully supervised several Ph.D. (n=7) and M.Sc. (n=10) students, many of whom have received prestigious awards at international congresses.

Ioannis has worked in the areas of pulmonary rehabilitation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing for over 30 years. For 3 years he was the Chair of the Rehabilitation and Chronic Care group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and he is currently the ERS Head of Assembly 1 (Respiratory, Clinical Care & Physiology). He has contributed to several joint ERS and American Thoracic Society (ATS) Statements on pulmonary rehabilitation, skeletal muscle dysfunction, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, respiratory muscle function assessment and physical inactivity in patients with COPD. He has co-chaired an ATS/ERS joint policy statement for enhancing implementation, use and delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation globally.  He was a member of the Development Group for COPD for the WHO Rehabilitation Programme. He is currently a National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) expert advisory panel member for managing the long-term effects of COVID-19. His research focuses on exercise intolerance in chronic lung disorders, and on the benefits of interval exercise training in COPD.  Ioannis is an Hororary Research Fellow at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
