Dr Shaun Young

Assistant Professor

Department: Architecture and Built Environment

Dr Shaun Young is an architectural practitioner and Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment.

Teaching

Since joining Northumbria, Shaun has taught across all levels of the architecture programme. He is currently co-leading Year 1 (2020-), having previously lead Year 3 (2018-21) and an award-winning MA design studio entitled ‘Landhaus’ (2016-18). Shaun is an experienced educator and has taught at a number of other schools of architecture in the UK, leading MA design studios at the University of Nottingham and Birmingham City University, and final year BA design studios at Kingston University and Newcastle University.

Research

Shaun’s research is design driven and practice-led. His doctoral thesis, entitled ‘Contemporary Applications of the Picturesque in Architecture: A Practice-led Approach’, explored how concepts, techniques, and strategies from the eighteenth century Picturesque can inform contemporary architectural design. His current research continues to explore themes emerging from his doctorate and is concerned with how visual methodologies from architectural practice might be re-appropriated to provide alternatives to more traditional modes of conducting research in architecture.

Practice

Before joining Northumbria, Shaun worked in architectural practice for several award winning, design-led architecture offices in the UK and Switzerland including Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios; DRDH Architects; Adam Khan Architects; Architektbüro A. Furrer und Partner; Matheson Whiteley; and Pitman Tozer Architects. Shaun continues to work as an architectural practitioner and is currently working on several practice-led design research projects for community interest groups, artist collectives and local authorities in the North East of England.
