Entry Requirements

This page provides an overview of the Academic and English language requirements for St. George’s University (SGU) Medical Degree Programme and Tracks offered in Newcastle.

Academic Entry Requirements

The table below outlines the minimum entry requirements for the SGU Doctor of Medicine (MD) Programme and Tracks offered in Newcastle. Please note that the Seven-Year MD Track is not currently available in Newcastle. Students who wish to join this Programme can find further information on the SGU website.

Please note that the SGU Faculty Student Selection Committee will consider each applicant’s entire background – academic, personal development, extracurricular activities, and social commitments – when determining suitability for admission.

English Language Requirements

Students must demonstrate their English language ability through a test or qualification recognised by SGU:

IELTS: 7.0 overall with a minimum 7.0 in each component

TOEFL: 94 overall with a minimum 24 in Writing and Listening, 23 in Speaking, and 27 in Writing  

Password-Skills: 7.0 overall with minimum 7.0 in each component

Cambridge Academic English - C1 Advanced: Overall 185 with a minimum of 185 in each band

PTE Academic: Overall 66.3 with a minimum 67.6 in Reading, 66.2 in Listening, 65.3 in Speaking, and 82.3 in Writing

SGU recognises and approves various science/medical pathway programs. Each program is assessed individually by the Admissions Committee.

5-Year MD Track

Full IB Diploma

Minimum score of 32 points: 3 HL science subjects and 2 HL subjects, including minimum grade 5 in biology and chemistry.

GCE A Levels

3 subjects with minimum grade B in biology, chemistry, and maths or physics.

Europe/International

Caribbean CAPE 1 & 2

Minimum 3 subjects units I & II 222, including biology, chemistry, and math or physics. If math and/or physics with CAPE 1 at 1, then a non-science CAPE 2 will be considered.

5-Year MD Track

European Baccalaureate

Minimum average of 12/20 in sciences including biology and chemistry.

Finnish Ylioppilastutkinto and Swedish Studentexamen

L in biology and chemistry, and E in 2 other subjects.

French/Lebanese Baccalaureate

Minimum averageof 12/20 in sciences including biology and chemistry.

New Zealand NCEA Level 3

Endorsed with overall Excellence, including 20 Level 3 credits in each biology and chemistry, and 20 Level 3 credits in either Math or Physics (with at least Merit)

Norwegian Vitnemal-videregaende Opplaering

Overall grade 5, including Advanced Course II biology and chemistry.

Scottish Higher Standard

4 subjects with minimum grade A, including HL biology and Chemistry.

Swedish Fullständigt Slutbetyg

Overall grade C in natural sciences, including biology and chemistry.

All 10+ 2 India Senior Secondary School Certificate

Minimum average of 80% average in biology, chemistry, math, physics, and English. *A pre-sessional math program may be necessary if math has not been taken or successfully completed before matriculation.

Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education Advanced level

Minimum 3 subjects including biology, chemistry, and math or physics. Biology, math, or physics can be accepted at an AS level with strong non-science 3rd A level. *A pre-sessional math program may be necessary if math has not been taken or successfully completed beforematriculation.

Global

American High School Diploma

AP grades are not required; however, Admissions may evaluate students who completed the test and received 4 or 5 in biology and/or chemistry or 95% or higher overall averages.

6-Year MD Track

BTEC

Diploma in the appropriate sciences with overall distinctions.

GCE AS Levels

3 subjects with minimum grade B in biology, chemistry, and maths or physics.

Secondary School Diploma

Strong science performance in biology and chemistry.

Europe/International

Austrian Reifezeugnis (Matura)

Overall average of 2, including biology and chemistry.

6-Year MD Track

Canadian High School Graduation Diploma - minimum of 65% in five subjects.

High School with strong sciences and a minimum overall average 3.5 GPA.

Dutch Diploma Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO)

Overall grade 8, including in biology and chemistry.

Finnish Ylioppilastutkinto and Swedish Studentexamen

Grade E in biology and chemistry, with M in 2 other subjects.

French/Lebanese Baccalaureat (General)

Minimum average of 12/20 in sciences, including biology and chemistry.

Pass with a minimum 1.75, and 12/15 in biology and chemistry.

Irish Leaving Certificate

6 HL subjects with a minimum of grade H2 including biology, chemistry, and math.

Italian Esame di Stato

Overall grade 85, including biology and chemistry.

Strong science performance in biology and chemistry.

South Korean Senior High School Diploma/High School Certificate of Graduation

Minimum B in foundation sciences, math, and English.

Taiwan Senior High School Leaving Certificate

Minimum 6 subjects with grade B in biology, chemistry, math, physics, and English.

Thailand Certificate of Secondary Education/MAW 6

6 subjects with a minimum grade 3 in sciences, math, and English.
