Students can enter the MD Degree Programme from any education system around the world via the Five-, Six-, or Seven-Year Tracks. SGU has a large network of 75+ affiliated hospitals and health centres in the US and UK. Thanks to a unique partnership between Northumbria University and SGU in Grenada, you can earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and study for up to three years in the UK. The Medical Degree Track partnership commenced in January 2007 and has since welcomed more than 2,000 medical students to Newcastle.

You will begin your studies at Northumbria University in Newcastle and complete one, two, or three years of study, dependent upon your enrolment in either the Four-Year Programme or the Five- and Six-Year MD Track. You will then complete one year of integrated basic sciences at SGU’s True Blue campus in Grenada, leading to your clinical rotations in the US and UK.

Four-Year MD Programme (MD4)

The Four-Year MD Programme (MD4) is aimed at students who have completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree with a strong science focus. You will study one year of basic sciences in Newcastle before progressing to the second year of basic sciences training at SGU’s True Blue campus in Grenada. Upon completing the second year of basic sciences, students who satisfy the necessary requirements will be granted a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) award from Northumbria University. You can complete up to two years of clinical rotations in the US or UK, subject to local visa policies and restrictions in each location. Students are also able to complete elective clinical rotations in Canada. The MD will be granted upon successfully completing the Programme.

Five-Year MD Track (MD Track 5)

The Five-Year MD Track (MD Track 5) is suitable for students who have completed their high school education and have performed well in science subjects. You will study for two years in Newcastle. Your first year of study will focus on pre-clinical studies, followed by a second year of basic sciences. After two years, you will progress to the second year of basic sciences training at SGU’s True Blue campus in Grenada. Upon completing the second year of basic sciences, students who satisfy the necessary requirements will be granted a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) award from Northumbria University. You can complete up to two years of clinical rotations in the US or UK, subject to local visa policies and restrictions in each location. Students are also able to complete elective clinical rotations in Canada. The MD will be granted upon successfully completing the Programme.

Six-Year MD Track (MD Track 6)

The Six-Year MD Track (MD Track 6) is suitable for students who have completed their high school education and have performed well in science subjects. You will join the Northumbria University Foundation Year for Medical Sciences. This established Track prepares students for Year One entry to several Northumbria University bachelor’s degree programmes. After successfully completing your Foundation Year and meeting the necessary progression requirements, you will join the Five-Year MD Track (MD Track 5).


The SGU and Northumbria University MD Programme and Tracks have been designed to develop your knowledge, clinical skills, and research interests. You can experience various healthcare systems, enabling you to practise medicine across all specialities with a global perspective. The Programme and Tracks offered in Newcastle are equivalent to those delivered in Grenada.

The MD Programme at SGU opens doors for a medical career internationally, having been accredited and approved by many external regulatory and accrediting bodies. The accreditation standards used to accredit the SGU’s MD Programme and Tracks have been deemed comparable to those used by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. This organisation accredits US and Canadian medical schools. SGU has contributed over 22,000 physicians to the global physician workforce, and the University’s MD alums have practised in every state in the US and in more than 50 countries globally.*
