What will I learn on this module?

This module will develop your understanding of the role of line managers in managing and developing individuals in work organisation. It will introduce you to both theory and practice of human resource management. This will include an overview of the legal and regulatory context of managing people including diversity, equity and equality. You will explore and evaluate good practice in relation to, for example, talent management, recruitment and selection, performance management, reward, and appraisal. You will consider the role of managers in leading for high performance of individuals and teams that encourages learning and creativity. This will include strategies for creating a positive work environment that encourages participation and engagement with concern for building trust and ethical and responsible behaviours.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a range of interactive on-line learning materials, scheduled on-line workshops at key points in the module, tutor guidance, feedback, and independent directed and self-directed learning. Importantly, you will also learn at work, through reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. The workshops will introduce you to module, assessment and key theories and concepts.

Your learning is supported by a Teaching and Learning Plan, offering guidance on what you should be doing on a week by week basis. This will include engaging with the online learning materials, reading, workplace reflection and preparing for the scheduled online interactive workshops. These are designed to help with the completion of the assessment. Within this plan there are also suggested learning activities, which guide you in your independent learning. These activities allow you to reflect and evaluate your knowledge and skills in this area.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The Teaching and Learning plan will provide several prompts and guidance to support you academically. Support will also include opportunities to gain feedback from workshop tutors and peers through the online discussion board and Blackboard Collaborate.

Your module is supported by an e-learning portal, which houses all the module learning materials, workshop resources, interactive activities, assessment details and various other support facilities which are provided by the University.

In addition, to assist you in developing knowledge, you will have access to the University's library facilities, including extensive electronic resources, eBooks and electronic academic journal articles.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

Critically analyse concepts and theories relating to the study of managing people in organisations at organisational, group and individual contexts (MLO 1)

Identify and propose interventions /solutions to resolve people management problems at individual, group and/or organisational levels (MLO2)

Assess a the relevance of theory for HR practice and apply it where appropriate to improve practice (MLO3)

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity)

Demonstrate appreciation of suitable and ethical practice for inclusive approaches to managing diverse and resourceful humans in organisations (MLO4)

How will I be assessed?

Formative feedback will be provided in relation to a range of in-class and /or online activities throughout the module.

Summative assessment will consist of one individual assessment in two parts:

First task: You will devise a specific HR intervention to address a particular issue in your own organisation/an organisation known to you. (1200 words - 50%)
(MLOs: 2,3,4)

Second task: to provide a written report to justify and provide rationale for the intervention, linking theory and good practice (1800 words - 50%)
(MLOs: 1,2,3,4)

Criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected in the assignment and how you will be assessed on your performance.

Module abstract

This module will support you to develop your understanding of a key issue for business organisations: managing with and through people. By developing your understanding of a range of theories and human resource management issues, you will deepen your appreciation of the role of line managers in leading and developing individuals and teams. The module supports you to draw on your own experiences allowing you to reflect and evaluate your own effectiveness in this area and to link theory and practice in the contexts in which you work.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
