FA6030 - Fashion Business and Management

What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will engage with the fast-paced world of contemporary fashion from a business and management perspective. You will learn how the fashion industry operates—from design and production to marketing and retail—while gaining critical insights into its key structures and functions.

Throughout the module you will explore key legal, financial, ethical, and sustainability challenges that are shaping the modern global fashion industry and understand the importance of inclusivity in modern fashion business practices and stakeholder engagement. You will also examine how technology is revolutionising fashion management and learn how different organisational cultures and structures influence industry success.

Through real-world case studies and practical fashion business scenarios, you will sharpen your problem-solving skills and develop strategic thinking for leading fashion businesses now and in the future.

How will I learn on this module?

You will attend weekly sessions, including a number of lectures that will introduce and critically explore the core elements of fashion business and strategic management approaches, which will be supported by practical workshops in which you will engage with real-world business management scenarios and evaluate fashion industry case studies. These tutor-led and peer-learning activities will be supported by tutor-student tutorials that will support your learning and your assessment preparations and progress.

The module reading list and tutor-set learning activities mean that you also need to engage in self-directed learning that will enhance your knowledge and skillset in relation to fashion business and management approaches and strategies and will also ensure that peer-focused learning experiences are rewarding, and assessment preparation and completion is seamless.

While you will receive summative feedback post assessment submission that will provide you with evaluative commentary and important feedforward that can aid you in improving future work, you will also receive formative support in tutorial and assessment-focused class sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will initially receive lectures outlining the goals and content of the module methods of the project you are asked to complete, and these will provide ongoing guidance, support and assessment Q&A opportunities throughout the module. Additionally, you will have one-to-one tutorial support from the module tutor(s). In terms of academic and learning support, you will build on the guidance you receive in the Academic, Research and Career Development module and further academic skills support can be accessed via the University Library.

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of global fashion business organisation and core managerial strategies (K&U 1).

2. Understand fashion market dynamics, and emerging trends to inform strategic decision-making in a global environment (K&U 2).

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

3. Apply contemporary design theories and emerging technologies to understand complex creative challenges in fashion business (IPSA 1).

4. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of business and management practices through real-world fashion case studies (IPSA 2).

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

5. The development of academic and professional curiosity and a research-driven peer-produced teamwork to apply core fashion business and management principles and practices (PVA1, PVA 3).

How will I be assessed?

This module will be summatively assessed at the end of the module through the following submissions:

1. Fashion Business Case Study Analysis (60%): This assessment is based on a self-chosen evaluation of a fashion company’s business model and managerial strategy LO1, LO2, L04 2500 words.

2. Fashion Business Proposal (40%): Students will develop a strategic business plan for an existing fashion brand or a self-imagined start-up, incorporating key managerial and operational business elements LO3, LO5. 1500 words.

Summative feedback will be provided to students through the appropriate teaching and learning platform (Blackboard/Turnitin). Formative feedback will be delivered across the module.

Module abstract

This module enables you to get to the heart of what makes the fashion industry tick as a business. You will learn the core perspectives that drives the fashion industry in a global context, look at a series of contemporary fashion business exemplars and examine key factors such as the production and design processes that are central to fashion, an introduction to marketing platforms, and essential elements in fashion retail management and planning in addition to learning about legal, financial, and regulatory frameworks and begin to think about ethical, sustainability, and inclusivity issues that influence and affect fashion businesses at a global level, and which will be crucial to the future of the fashion industry. In terms of assessment, you to take a deep dive into the workings of a fashion company in the form of a case study but also set out your own business plan for a rebrand or a startup fashion enterprise. Therefore, by the end of the module, you will have both academic and practical knowledge and insight into the business of fashion and its strategic management.
