What will I learn on this module?
This module aims to enhance your coaching craft through a thorough critical and reflective analysis of evidence-informed coaching strategies and actions designed to enhance coach and athlete performance in areas such as wellbeing, engagement and thriving. The module builds on the foundational psycho-social theories of coaching outlined in SP5039: Coaching Skills and Practice to build a deeper and richer contextual appreciation of the specific coaching strategies and actions that influence performance in athletes and coaches alike. You will have the opportunity to reflect upon current and past practice and critically evaluate coaching research to develop an adaptive toolkit of coaching strategies and actions aimed at enhancing athlete and coach experiences of sport. By the end of this module, you will be able to critically evaluate, discuss and apply evidence based coaching behaviours aimed at improving athlete and coach performance in sport.
How will I learn on this module?
Taught content will be delivered through a combination of lectures, seminar activities, practical workshops, demonstrations, supervised practice and self-directed activities. Learning will be supported through access to a variety of teaching materials available on the eLP. Taught content will be both staff and student led, with an emphasis placed on students’ ability to practically apply theoretical and evidence-based approaches to coaching. Practical sessions will provide opportunity to apply theory to practice and receive peer/tutor feedback to develop practical coaching capabilities. Associated seminar sessions will be used to discuss the application of theory to practice. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in independent study through the provision of reading lists and topics to be covered in preparation for all taught sessions There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the Blackboard module site. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class.
The module leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. All staff members of the module team will be available for individual pre-booked meetings. Additional support will include feedback from tutors during small-group seminars. In addition, the module leader will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board (found on the eLP for this module) so that the whole group can benefit. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

How will I be assessed?
Summative Assessment: Case study (3000 words)

Verbal formative feedback will be provided to students on a continuing basis during practical and seminar sessions. In these sessions’ case studies of applied examples from the field and research will be examined. Directed tasks and problem solving will require students to utilize their knowledge to critically examine theory and develop effective psycho-socio-pedagogical processes that are applicable across coaching contexts.
Students will receive peer and tutor feedback on their efforts. Dedicated sessions will be scheduled into the module to enable students to raise questions regarding the assessment. In addition to verbal formative feedback being given throughout the module, there will be written feedback provided on completion of the summative assessment.

Module abstract
Enhancing coaching craft is a research informed module that aims to promote a critical understanding of the psycho-social pedagogical processes that nurture coach and athlete performance (such as/or through engagement, well-being and psychological thriving). With an emphasis on reflection on applied coaching settings, the module will facilitate critical consideration of coaching strategies and actions that enhance coaches’ and athletes’ performance through enhanced well-being, resilience and engagement across a wide range of sporting and teaching contexts. The purpose of the module is to help you understand the complexities of real-world sport coaching and equip you with an adaptive toolkit to promote long term participation and performance in sport.
Critical reflection of past and current coaching practice is a key tenet of this module. You will be supported through this process by engaging in a series of workshops, seminars, lectures and practically oriented experiential learning opportunities led by our expert team of research informed, practically experienced academic staff. During the taught content of the course, you will be challenged to consider how research informed approaches to coaching can promote well-being, engagement and thriving in sport across multiple contexts.
On completion of this module, you will be able to critically analyse, reflect and discuss how specific evidence informed coaching behaviours can enhance well-being, engagement and thriving, taking into the account the complex and multifaceted nature of applied practice.
