What will I learn on this module?
This module focuses on advanced professional practice and development. It explores aspects of coaching and mentoring within a contemporary police service and how these may enable individuals to meet personal, professional, and organisational goals. You will learn about the theories pertinent to the above concepts and their relevance to a policing context. Throughout the module you will understand the importance of mentoring in terms of learning, development, and practice-based performance. You will explore who learning from coaching and mentoring sessions can be applied in the workplace. In addition to the above, the module will focus on the principles of work-based assessment within policing and the relevance of this in promoting consistent, professional standards within the organisation.
Additionally, the module centres on the completion of an Operational Competence Portfolio (OCP) which ensures student officers have met the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours set out by the operational standard. In completing the OCP you will critically analyse and reflect on the foundation provided by operational competence and the application of higher-level knowledge(s), skills, and behaviours that are pivotal to the role of police constable (as per the National Apprenticeship Standard).

How will I learn on this module?
Topics will normally be introduced in lectures and explored through learning involving a variety of classroom-based lectures and role play scenarios. The aim is to use interactive presentations, speakers from relevant police departments, tutor-guided and independent student learning, along with student presentations and formative assessments. Students will be encouraged to develop independent learning skills. The university library offers support for all students through its catalogue and an Ask4Help online tool.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Students will be supported through a variety of means including classroom participation and discussion. All lecture, seminar and workshop material will be available on the University’s eLearning Portal, supplemented with guidance on further reading relevant to the subjects. Written or verbal assessment feedback will be used to enable students to understand how they performed and how these aspects can be improved in subsequent assessments.

What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding (K&U):
1) Understand the principles and practices of work-based assessment within policing
2) Appreciate the importance and applicability of coaching and mentoring to a professional police organisation and the skills required to deliver them
Intellectual/Professional skills & abilities (IPSA):
1. Demonstrate the skills required to encourage others to achieve their full potential through coaching and mentoring
2. Demonstrate complex knowledge around police practice including police powers, legislation, criminal procedure, police officer autonomy, and discretion while showcasing an ability to contextualise this within an evidenced-based framework.
3. Engage in continuous process of self-reflection, developing strategies to improve own professional knowledge and practice.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. Demonstrate a commitment to the development of skills in colleagues
How will I be assessed?
Assessment 001: a 20-minute role play presentation which students will complete in pairs. This assessment tests the following MLOs: KU 1, 2; IPSA 1; PVA 1
Assessment 002: a Professional Discussion held between a student officer and a Force-representative based on a student officer’s Operational Competence Portfolio (OCP) i.e., key performance criteria. The Professional Discussion additionally focuses on a student officer’s acquisition of professional Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) which underpin their work as a police constable as aligned to the National Apprenticeship Standard. This is to ensure you have met the KSBs set out by the operational standard. The Professional Discussion will last approximately one-hour and is assessed on a pass/fail basis. This assessment tests the following MLOs: IPSA 2, 3
Assessment criteria and grade-related criteria will be made available to you to support you in completing assessments. Grade-Related Descriptors are descriptions of the level of skills, knowledge and/or attributes that you need to demonstrate in order achieve a certain grade or mark in an assessment, providing a mechanism by which the quality of an assessment can be measured and placed within the overall set of marks.

Module abstract
This module engages students in the use of and analysis of key ideas related to coaching and mentoring. The classroom-based activities will provide an opportunity for students to test out, analyse aspects of their learning such as their own understandings, thoughts and skills on these based on your own reading and research endeavours. Students will do this in a supportive environment with contributions from your peers. The module will involve role play scenarios for students to practice coaching and mentoring skills.
Additionally, the module involves a period of independent learning as student officers work towards completion of an Operational Competence Portfolio (OCP); this ensures student officers have met the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours set out by the operational standard. In completing the OCP you will critically analyse and reflect on the foundation provided by operational competence and the application of higher-level knowledge(s), skills, and behaviours that are pivotal to the role of police constable (as per the National Apprenticeship Standard).
