Fees and Funding 2025/26 Entry

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,535

* You should expect to pay tuition fees for every year of study. The University may increase fees in the second and subsequent years of your course at our discretion in line with any inflationary or other uplift, as decided by the UK Government, up to the maximum amount for fees permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year. To give students an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UK government has recently suggested that increases may be linked to RPIX ( Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments)

The Design Foundation course is delivered over one year and broken down into 3 blocks that will allow you to study from a broad choice of creative design disciplines and equip you with the subject knowledge and essential skills that will be required for your entry into a degree program in design: 

Block 1: Contemporary Portfolio Skills 

Through a set of lively design projects and lectures, you will experience a range of specialist design skills and explore how historical and contemporary thinking influences design. (Skills include for example: fashion and textiles and textile craft, painting, sculpture, 4D photography and time-based media and drawing and conceptual practice, graphic design, illustration, fashion communication and film and animation, architecture and spatial design, jewellery, footwear, and fashion accessories, product design and ceramics and design for theatre screen and performance.) 

Block 2: Design Specialisms: 

Through a range of short projects, you will rotate through the 4 different design specialisms of communication design, product design, fashion design and interior design to explore these subject’s areas in more detail. 

Block 3: Major Design Project and Exhibition 

You culminate your studies on the course giving you the opportunity to showcase your confidence, skills and knowledge through a self-directed design project in a design specialism of your choice, the module will include a field trip. The skills and knowledge that you have acquired is curated and presented into a portfolio that is supported with a public exhibition of all your work undertaken over the academic year.

The Design Studio Skills module serves as an essential starting point for developing core practical design skills. It provides a comprehensive introduction to key design practices that will prepare you for exploring specialised disciplines in subsequent modules. As an introductory study, it is designed to help you build confidence and competence in fundamental design approaches, ensuring you have a solid grounding in the basics before moving on to design specialisms.



Throughout the module, you will engage in hands-on studio work that covers a range of key design skills, including sketching, visual communication, model making, and the use of digital tools and design software. You will be introduced to the design process, beginning with research and idea generation, and progressing through development, refinement, and final presentation of your ideas. The emphasis will be on experimentation, allowing you to explore different media, materials, and design techniques in a supportive environment.

The Design Context module explores the historical, cultural, and contemporary issues in design, giving you a broad understanding of how design has evolved and its relevance in today's world. You will study key design movements and the work of influential designers, gaining insight into how their contributions shaped the current landscape. The module also introduces critical debates around contemporary issues, such as sustainability, ethics, and technological innovation, fostering an understanding of the challenges designers face in today’s society.

Through a combination of lectures, group discussions, and case studies, you will explore design within the disciplines of communication design, product design, fashion, and interior design. This broad scope allows you to see how different areas of design intersect and influence each other, laying the groundwork for your progression into a specialised undergraduate programme. The module will also emphasise design's societal impact, encouraging you to think critically about the ethical and cultural implications of your work.

You will follow a complete design process, from research to project realisation, allowing you to build on the skills, knowledge, and understanding gained throughout the Design Foundation modules. The aim is to guide you through researching, conceptualising, and developing a final design solution, encouraging you to explore a range of ideas in a studio environment and take ownership of your learning.

Throughout the module, you will present your design concepts and artefacts to tutors and peers in various formats, learning to reflect on feedback and improve your work. The project will demonstrate how your practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and conceptual thinking have evolved. You will be encouraged to experiment and take creative risks and may present you with an opportunity to enhance your portfolio by exploring a complementary area of design. The final outcome will support your transition into further undergraduate studies, showcasing the critical and reflective approach you’ve developed.

You will also learn the fundamental principles of visual communication, this will be complemented by visual research methods and critical thinking skills, helping you build a solid academic foundation for further study and development.

Throughout the module, you will focus on creativity and innovation, exploring how designers work in the modern world and adapting to changing trends. Digital literacy will be essential as you prepare your final portfolio for presentation. Student Work

From the start of the course, you'll be encouraged to develop both independent and group learning and research skills. 

We emphasise transferable skills, especially in communication and presentation. You'll also build your confidence and abilities as a university learner through a detailed induction, lectures, seminars, and creative skills workshops. 

The course is designed to be flexible, allowing you to explore different avenues of design and find your strengths. You’ll work on scrapbook presentations, concept visualisations, 2D and 3D design projects, essays, and presentations. You’ll end your course by compiling a portfolio of your design work and we celebrate the conclusion of your year by holding a design show and exhibition.

 

Staff

You will be taught by a breadth of internationally leading design practitioners, researchers and educators.

Their expertise includes visual communication, UX/UI design, data visualisation, digital arts, publishing and social innovation. By sharing their design expertise, they will help you shape your own design future through the course. 

 

Facilities

Our course is predominantly delivered in purpose-made design studios, which provide space for formal teaching but also are open for independent study. Alongside the studios you have access to a comprehensive range of technical facilities, workshops, creative technology, photography studios, dedicated computer aided design lab, and large format printing. You will also have easy access to a wealth of knowledge through Northumbria University’s award winning library.
