What will I learn on this module?
On this module, you will learn how to develop and present a professional design portfolio and exhibition that showcases your evolving design skills and creative expertise in one of the four design disciplines; communication design, interior design, product design or fashion design. You will be encouraged to experiment with visual communication, take creative risks, and refine your personal design approach. The process will allow you to become a more confident and competent designer, essential for a professional career in the design industry. You will also learn the fundamental principles of visual communication, this will be complemented by visual research methods and critical thinking skills, helping you build a solid academic foundation for further study and development.
Throughout the module, you will focus on creativity and innovation, exploring how designers work in the modern world and adapting to changing trends. Digital literacy will be essential as you prepare your final portfolio for presentation. Additionally, you will develop collaboration and teamwork skills by working with peers to organise and present your final exhibition.
How will I learn on this module?
You will engage in experiential learning through studio-based activities, with practical workshops aimed at developing your design portfolio and preparing for a final exhibition. During each session, you will follow a structured programme of workshops, seminars, and group tutorials to refine your design process and produce a portfolio of creative work for your final exhibition.
Your progress will be formatively assessed at key stages, and you will participate in projects, peer critiques, learning valuable collaboration skills while working together to develop the exhibition. Throughout the module, you will document and reflect on your design process, valuing both successes and failures. Experimentation with various design ideas, methods, mock-up techniques, and prototypes will be key in shaping your final portfolio and exhibition.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The school operates an extended studio approach (X-Studio), combining physical studios, making workshops, and virtual spaces to create a flexible and responsive environment. Each design challenge begins with an introductory lecture outlining themes and learning outcomes, followed by staged interim critiques where you'll receive valuable feedback. Formative assessments will help manage your workload and apply feedback before final assessments.
Learning materials, including module documentation, presentations, and reading lists, are accessible via the eLearning Portal, with additional support available through Skills Plus workshops and Academic Language Skills (ALS) for international students. Module tutors will guide taught sessions and offer consultation hours for further feedback.
