What will I learn on this module?
This module will support your development in advancing your clinical skills, leadership skills and supervision skills, linked to the NMC (2024) Standards of proficiency for nursing associates outlined in Annexe A and B.
The module will help you develop greater confidence to develop and practice your clinical skills, leadership skills and supervisory skills within a simulated environment. You will receive support through peer feedback and assessment as you enhance your knowledge and proficiency in advanced skills, such as performing 12-lead ECGs, wound care, and venepuncture.
As a supervisor in the practice environment your role is pivotal in the shaping of learning experiences and professional development of other learners. You will analyse the evidence supporting effective leadership approaches and skills necessary for MDT collaboration, focusing on improving patient outcomes and team dynamics. Evaluating your role involves assessing the key areas of coaching, facilitation of learning, assessment and feedback. You will develop your supervisory skills to support learners and lead on the delivery of care that has been prescribed by the registered nurse.
Within the module you will demonstrate resilience and emotional intelligence and be capable of explaining the rationale that influences your judgements and decisions in routine, complex and challenging situations. This will enable you to understand how to utilise evidence to underpin your practice. You will learn to apply and assess your leadership abilities in delivering safe and effective nursing associate care, managing care activities with a focus on patient safety and quality. The module emphasises the development of personal and professional qualities essential for working effectively within an inter-professional practice placement team, fostering effective communication, adaptability, and collaborative skills.
You will examine and assess your role as a supervisor, developing skills to effectively support learners in the practice setting. To guide and enhance your clinical decision-making, this module introduces various leadership models and supervision frameworks relevant to the nursing associate role, including practice supervisor training.
How will I learn on this module?
This module uses a problem-based and skills-based learning approach to ensure that your learning is both practical and directly applicable to nursing associate practice. You will develop core skills through engaging in seminars, practical workshops, online supported learning (OSL) resources and immersive simulated experiences, which are designed to create practice placement environments that reflect real-life practice settings, which will enable you to practice your clinical and leadership skills in q safe evidence-based facilitated environment before real-life application with patients.
Practical workshops will allow you to work collaboratively with peers, encouraging shared learning, critical thinking and in providing peer support and feedback. Practical sessions will be dedicated to rehearsing nursing associate skills which will provide you with opportunity to develop your psychomotor skills. Academic guidance and support to build your confidence and competence will be available throughout the module. Additionally, you will have access to specialised online resources, including the Skills4Practice website, to further support your learning. By practicing your skills in a simulated environment, you will develop the clinical proficiency needed to deliver safe, effective patient care and achieve skill annexe A & B sign off.
Practice placement experiences will additionally enable you the opportunity to apply and refine these skills, you will be supported through supervision and feedback from experienced practitioners.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by a specialist module team in Nursing, Midwifery and Health. You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure you are able to engage with concepts of safe nursing associate practice. You will also be supported via the OSL systems in addition to face-to-face teaching and group work activities and discussion. You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Further support for your learning is provided with a 24-hour IT Helpline, a comprehensive range of services through the Student Life and Wellbeing Team and the University’s student portal, which gives help and advice on student enquiries such as disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance, assessments, and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries.
You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials, including the electronic reading list and other teaching and learning methods, will be available via Blackboard Ultra and library services. The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. All support will be in line with any Student Accessibility Plan (SAP).

Formative:
Completion of the practice supervisor online training.
Summative:
2500 word: Analyse a leadership approach and supervision strategy in the implementation of a skill or intervention aimed at promoting well-being or preventing ill-health. Evaluate the underpinning evidence base for the intervention and explore the knowledge, skills, and values essential for leading and supervising its effective delivery in nursing associate practice (MLO1-5)

Module abstract
