PY7006 - Forensic Psychology Practice

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the core competencies underpinning practice as a forensic psychologist, including training, consultancy, policy development, supervision and expert witness work across a range of settings and with a range of client groups, through drawing upon the latest psychological research and theory. You will learn about the role of forensic psychologists in the private and public sectors and about the importance of self-care. You will also be taught skills in reflective practice and you will have the opportunity to learn about career progression as a forensic psychologist, including the different routes to qualification. This module will have a strong global focus – thus meeting the needs of our international students - by addressing variations in forensic practice throughout the world, for instance, by considering how ethical challenges may vary across different countries and cultures. You will be taught about the qualification routes in different countries/ continents, including Europe and Australasia. For example, you will learn about the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations (EFPA) and its role in promoting multi and interculturalism in psychology, as well as workforce mobility across Europe and beyond. Lastly, you will be introduced to the benefits of BPS Membership.

Indicative topics may include:
• Understanding the work of forensic psychologists in a training and consultancy capacity
• An introduction to how forensic psychologists play a role in the development, implementation and evaluation of policy
• Considering the routes to training as a forensic psychologist, as well as the importance of professional registration
• Exploring how the role of forensic psychologists is shaped by ethical, legal and practical frameworks and specific considerations when working in private practice
• Learning about the theory of reflective practice and developing skills in reflective practice
• Practising as a forensic psychologist internationally

This module meets the curriculum and core standards specified by the British Psychological Society (BPS). The assessment for this module will require you to draw upon psychological theory and research and to communicate effectively in an engaging and thought-provoking way. This will assist you in developing skills in professional communication.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through interactive workshops which will include didactic teaching and practical work. These workshops will give you the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the understanding and evaluation of forensic psychology practice. Directed study will be encouraged through the provision of reading lists including pertinent research articles that accompany the workshops, and the provision of study questions and topics to read in preparation for subsequent sessions. You will be encouraged to engage in critical analysis and self-reflection throughout this module through which you will develop conceptual knowledge of the topic areas whilst considering their application in real-world settings.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module tutors will support you by making a variety of resources linked to the teaching sessions and assessments available on the eLearning Portal (e.g. PowerPoint slides, activities and tasks, supplementary materials, reading lists) to encourage further exploration of the topics. Discussion boards on the eLearning portal will be available for students to pose and respond to questions among peers and to module tutors. This enhances collegiality and also means that support is available to all students. Drop-in sessions will support the delivery of workshops. Technology- enabled learning through the use of eLearning portal is embedded in the module.

MK&U1. Develop a critical understanding of research, theory, principles and competencies relating to forensic psychology practice both in the UK and internationally.

MIPSA1. Develop skills and competencies which are required for forensic psychology practice.

MIPSA2. Develop written and verbal communication skills in relation to forensic psychology practice.

MIPSA3. Develop reflective skills relating to learning and development.

MPVA1. Apply relevant ethical, legal and professional practice frameworks, e.g., BPS, HCPC and interact in a professional manner with a range of stakeholders

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment:
You will have the opportunity to engage in reflective discussions within sub-groups in order to develop skills in reflective practice and your awareness of key psychological theory and research. Feedback will be offered by the module tutor. [MK&U1, MIPSA 2, MPVA 2, MIPSA3, MPVA 1].

Summative assessment:
The module comprises one integrated training package assignment, which has two parts:

Part A: A 20-minute pre-recorded ‘pitch’/ of an idea/ proposal for a new training package which you would like to develop on a chosen topic [MK&U1, MIPSA1, MIPSA2, MPVA1].

Part B: A 1500-word critical reflective evaluation of the training package idea presented in part A This assignment will assess all module learning outcomes [MIPSA3 and MPVA1].

Feedback:
Feedback will be provided on the electronic submission of the summative assessment in the form of a level-specific rubric. Additional written comments will be provided that identify strengths and areas for improvement

General feedback is provided via the eLearning Portal. Cohort mean, standard deviation and distributions of marks for the are provided so students can compare their performance with that of their cohort.

You will learn about the core competencies underpinning practice as a forensic psychologist, including training, consultancy, policy development, supervision and expert witness work. You will learn about how these competencies are demonstrated within a range of forensic settings both in the UK and overseas, through drawing upon the latest psychological research, theory, legislation and practice protocols. You will be taught skills in reflective practice and you will have the opportunity to learn about career progression as a forensic psychologist, including the different routes to qualification both within the UK and internationally. You will be taught by leading academics and practitioners in the field who will bring their applied practical knowledge of working in this area into class. Your understanding of forensic psychology practice will be assessed, as well as your ability to reflect on learning from the module.
