Are you a compassionate person who wants to ensure women have a safe and life-enhancing experience during their maternity care?
‘Midwife’ means ‘with woman’ and this has underpinned the relationship between midwives and women for hundreds of years. The term ‘pregnant woman’ is commonly used across the world, and in evidence-based guidance for maternity care, to refer to all childbearing people. The MSc Midwifery Studies course has been developed to incorporate the changing context of childbearing and the future direction of midwifery practice, whilst drawing on the essential elements of midwifery.
The MSc has been designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), enabling you to apply for professional registration as a midwife in the UK upon successful completion of your degree. Building upon our successful BSc (Hons) Midwifery Studies course, we will support you to develop the knowledge and skills of a competent midwife. However, the MSc will also develop your graduate capabilities further, enabling you to work at a higher academic level, with a greater focus on innovation, leadership and research skills.
You will leave the course as a confident graduate who is able to deliver high quality care to childbearing women, their babies and families. Not only this, you will also be equipped to take up exciting research and leadership roles, with competencies that will help you move into more specialist areas and support improvements in midwifery care.
Delivered partially in our clinical skills centre, you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and training equipment that is at the forefront of the midwifery practice. You will also undertake a wide range of clinical placements, with the option for specialist placements such as perinatal mental health, and the opportunity to provide continuity of carer.
This Midwifery course is currently undergoing updates and is subject to Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) reaccreditation. The revised programme is being developed in alignment with NMC Standards of Proficiency for Midwifery 2019 standards, so please note that module details may be subject to change pending final approval.

With a key focus on the wellbeing of women and how to support them along their pregnancy journey, successful completion of this course will provide you with the qualification required to become a registered and practicing midwife in the UK.
We will be investing time into developing you as a proficient practitioner, enhancing your personal capabilities, exploring values and developing critical abilities, particularly research capability. By the end of the programme you will be able to confidently communicate complex issues, innovative ideas and research findings to audiences, through a variety of modes of dissemination.
You will be taught using a blended learning approach, whereby half of your time will be spent within a placement environment, and the other half delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. You will also be given the opportunity to work collaboratively with students on the BSc Midwifery Studies programme and other programmes within the school, as well as staff, developing support networks and a professional identity.
You will be supported to engage in the development of professional, personal, and graduate capabilities via the personal tutor process and an e-portfolio. The use of an integrated theory/practice model across the programme will enable regular contact with the University programme team, facilitating reflective learning, knowledge/skill consolidation and peer support.
Working within our Clinical Skills Centre, you will have the opportunity to practise your new skills within a simulated environment, before applying them to the workplace during your placements.
This course utilises a range of assessment methods including written assignments, oral presentations, reflective personal portfolios and the direct assessment of your clinical skill and competency. In your final year you will complete an extended dissertation where all of the skills and knowledge you have acquired can be put into practice.
This course is delivered by a specialist team of qualified midwives who draw on their experiences of theory and practice to deliver a course that is relevant to this ever-evolving area.
You will also receive support from other academics within the school and faculty. To further enhance your knowledge and learning we regularly welcome external speakers who are experts in their field and actively working within the profession.
Throughout the duration of your degree you will have access to ongoing support through a dedicated personal tutor and our practice learning team (PLT). You will also work alongside Practice Supervisors and Assessors – midwives but also other health and social care practitioners - who will be there to provide support and guidance whilst you undertake your clinical placements.
This course is based at our Coach Lane campus, which houses our Clinical Skills Centre. Our facilities are some of the most advanced in UK universities and allow us to ensure your learning evolves in-line with the latest developments in this profession.
You will have access to our University library – which has been recognised as third best in the UK – and well equipped working space, The Hub, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Technology is embedded throughout all aspects of your degree and you will receive ongoing support through our innovative e-learning platform, Blackboard Ultra, where you can access module handbooks, assessment information, lecture presentation slides and reading lists, as well as participating in live teaching sessions.
The Clinical Skills Centre, located at the heart of Coach Lane Campus, is the focal point for our Health students educational journey.

Research-rich learning is embedded throughout all of this course’s modules and some of our teaching team are research-active clinicians with their own areas of specialism.
Offering access to resources relating to current issues and developments within midwifery practice, you will be required to undertake your own research and discuss your findings with your peers and tutors, before producing a dissertation in the final year of your course. Undertaken under the supervision of your tutor, your dissertation gives you the opportunity to conduct applied research in an area of midwifery that interests you most. The culmination of this will be the presentation of your research project to a ‘public’ audience of peers, academic staff and maternity stakeholders.
The MSc Midwifery Studies programme will prepare graduates to be capable clinical midwives, but also to undertake leadership roles, future study and professional development.
Midwives can practice in both hospital and community environments, meaning there are many job opportunities once qualified. Our MSc placement options will put you in a good position to pursue specialist or management level roles as your career progresses.
You will be encouraged to define your learning needs and priorities, demonstrating a proactive approach to your own lifelong learning, to ensure you achieve all the requirements of the programme and in readiness for future employment.
